Noticed my local Canadian Tire(hardware/sporting goods/tupperware store) has Light My Fire Maya Dust on sale. Just curious if this stuff is any good???

Thanks
Craig

i believe its just ground up fatwood. you could probably get the same effect with regular fatwood processed in the same way.

i recall survivor man using it in an episode.

I got into some Mayan Dust once,

…I think it was made from dried peyote buttons.

Man that stuff works, ...who needs a fire!!! ;)

The Maya dust I got was useless! It was nothing like any fatwood shavings or dust I have ever made for myself. I was unable to get it to light with a firesteel, and it wasn't particularly eager to light even with a match. I may have just gotten a bad batch, but IIRC, mapper66 failed it during his firestarter test as well.

I'm no much of a fan of the Maya dust. As FLIX sated earlier it didn't even want to take a flame with my lighter. It also has more of a tendency to blow away that fatwood shavings do. You definitely made the right move by passing on it.

I've never tried it myself, but I don't often see anything positive said about Maya Dust. There was a thread on either British Blades or Bushcraft UK where a whole bunch of guys basically said that it came in a nice container, so just toss the shavings and make your own instead. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, eh? :)

It is hard to find a good container for 5 bucks nowadays though.....:D

That was my assessment of it exactly. I bought a can several years ago. Still have almost all of it, actually. If I ever get around to doing a PSK tin the maya dust is going to become dust in the wind real quick.

Pretty cool, but I think the, "Blah blah $10, blah blah $12, blah blah $7, Blah blah blah blah *Pause* Priceless...." Is a little over played.

Pretty cool though. I like using a pelican 1010 case for my fire kit.

With a few twigs of fatwood and a sharp knife, you have better igniting "shavings" and in a smaller package.

The Maya didn't have peyote. Maybe it was Don Juan's Mixture that Carlos Castenada talks about.;)
