Today I was at Ace Hardware, and was lookin at some pocket knives. They had Frost knives, Case knives, and Bear knives. Frost were chinese, Case models didn't interest me, and I don't know if Bear is any good. There were also some Victorinox Saks there, and one caught my eye. While I'm on my Alox kick, I noticed a Cadet. It is about the same size as my Recruit, but instead of having two knives, it has a main blade, and a nail file. Considering the main blade on an 84MM sak is small enough, I never really had much use for the small blade, so the addition of the file is pretty cool. So I bought it, and man oh man is this a slim knife!!! It literally DISAPPEARS in my pocket!!! I remember what Jackknife wrote about the keyring loop on Vic Alox Saks, but this one seems too small to be a main, heavy-duty cutting knife anyway. It'll probably be more of a gentleman's knife for me, something to carry when in dress pants or whatever. However, it's a pretty cool little knife to serve as a back up for the SI. I am really starting to love Alox. Very cool to look at, and rugged enough to take a pounding.

The Cadet has become one of my main carrying knives. They do also make the Cadet II that does have the second small blade, instead of the file. I find that nail file comes in handy for a lot of different things. I use it more than I thought I ever would, kind of like a lightweight remer.

I carried my Cadet today on my keychain, and it worked out very well. Not sure if that will be my main carry method, but it has it's advantages. One, it won't linger at the bottom of my pocket (I carry my keys in the pocket but clipped to my belt loop, so they hang somewhere in the middle) and thus won't get full of sand and lint. Also, I carry my keys with me everywhere I go, so my Cadet will always be with me. Also, I don't have to worry about it falling out of my pocket (a common occurance for some) since it will be attached to me. Hmmmm...... maybe I WILL keep this carry method.

Although I tend to rotate my traditional knives, an alox SAK is always on my keyring. At first I thought that wear might be a problem, but the alox coating is very resistant to scratching. No matter what else I might carry, I always have a Soldier or Cadet with me as a "dirty jobs" knife. In fact, I at times think it would be nice if other makers would offer a "working tools" series of traditional style knives in this material, but this no doubt would be way too utilitarian in appearance for most traditionalists to want to buy one.

Nice buy. I have a Copper Cadet, and I love it. The Soldier was the knife purchase that made me finally decide that I wanted to start 'collecting'. SAKs will always have a special appeal to me. I really want to get some of the Blue and Red alox models from Felinevet.

I carry a ALOX Farmer and love it! The ALOX handles are sweet! Keep a Leatherman MICRA on my keychain. It's the handiest little tool I have ever used. But the SAKs are hard to beat for quality, durability and price. By the way, you can get some super deals on used SAKs on the Bay. They are confiscated knives from airports by the NTSB. Some are in like new condition and others are more used. I'm sure some screener or federal agent has a really nice knife collection of Case, Schrade and Bucks. That's OK, I'll settle for a nice SAK at a cheap price any day.
