So I got back last night from a 4 day 24 mile backpacking trip on North Fork Mountain WV.

The whole length of the trail are these huge cliffs culminating in "Chimney Rocks" these huge columns of wrinkled limestone hundreds of feet tall. I had such a great time it's hard to express. It really tested my planning though because there is NO water on the Mt. Luckily a road to a microwave tower is on the top at 11 miles and we put an extra car there with water and provisions. Still that meant we had to carry 12 to 16 lbs of water each leg of the trip plus tent etc. Also freeze dried food is no help since you have to carry the water to re hydrate it!

Anyway I wanted to take the Pen Knife but with the sheath it was a little heavy, so I took my Granfors Bruks Mini Hatchet. The little thing cut firewood like the dickens but the last night I was cutting some really cured chestnut oak and about 5/8" of the head at the bottom cracked off!!!!!

Does anyone know the e mail or contact info for GB????? I'd like to send this back for replacement.

Here's the website.

I e-mailed them once before but I got no answer. YMMV.

I looked at a mini hatchet before. I thought it was too small. However, I figure if I were going to go 24 miles I might pack a stick and hope to find an axe head somewhere along the way. :)

Hollow- you didn't really pack water just to use freeze dried foods, did you? I guess I would have taken trail mix, jerky and peanut butter and a loaf of bread.

A poster whose name will not be mentioned complained he'd broken his HI khuks but everything from Northern Europe lasted- like Gransfors Bruks. Anything can break.

sorry to hear of the troubles with the GB....but I sure did like the story of your trip!

Long-distance hikes are wonderful for working out planning skills. Anybody can do a day hike or a drop-off-and-pick-up hike, but having to pack in and out with your own gear is just dandy. Can't wait until my boys are old enough to do it. Too risky right now with lil' ones. I've missed the hikes....:(

Got to do a few peaks along the App trail when I was living in GA & VA. Still, nothing compared to the 4000 ft. climbs we used to do out west.

Munk,

I pretty much strongly dislike freeze dried food. I did bring one meal of it cause I couldn't think of anything else to bring for that one, but I wouldn't again. My buddy brought ALL freeze dried and I'd say he had to bring more than Double the water.

For breakfast we boiled eggs in a pot, then ate the eggs with English muffins, had granola(homemade) and little boxed soy milks. We used the egg boiling water to make coffee with since fried eggs would have required more than one pot.

For lunch we had salami and Macaroni and cheese and crackers one day. Smoked salmon with brie cheese crackers and an apple another day and sardines crackers and string cheese one day and venison jerky(we made) with pepper jack another.

For dinner we had boil and eat beef stew with homemade muffins and then used the water for decaf. That was Friday night. We reached the car on Sunday afternoon and cooked hot dogs on a grill so we just ate our Salami and Macaroni and cheese lunch for dinner when we got to camp. We didn't need to cook it, it was that kind that is pre made(the mac and cheese). For dinner Monday night the previously mentioned freeze dried stuff that took too much water. I brought it cause it was free. My aunt had this huge Y2k stash of food like that she gave me a few years back and I have never used it.

I've heard of this occuring with GBs once before. In that case it was a problem with the heat treat.

They replaced the ax.
