Maybe I'll Strip my Becker

Just posted asking how to coat my BK14. But seeing that a lot of you Beckerheads are stripping yours down, maybe I'll do the same. How do I approach this task? Are their solvents involved or do I just use sandpaper? If I decide to put scales on do I need to worry about water getting between the scales and the steel and causing rust? I don't want to ruin my blade, but I want the full advantages I can get out of my Becker. The more details, the better. Pictures help too. Help me out!

Stay Sharp!

Give it a light sand to break up the coatings surface and give it a spray with some paint stripper (get it from hardware or auto parts stores) leave it for about 20 mins if your patient enough and then scrape the whole black goopy mess you should have off with a knife or whatever. A wire brush is good for getting into the stamp and hard to reach places.

Heres a pic of my BK14.

Personally I always do permernant scales because A. I cant do removable ones yet and B. I'm under the inpression that theres no gap between the tang and handle scale so water or fluids getting under shouldnt be a problem.

Hope this helped.

I use Klean Strip (the gel kind) and it works very well. Jasco is a popular choice as well but is supposedly VERY potent, so use caution. If you really want to protect your tang from rust then only strip the blade, just use some painters tape on the tang to protect it from the solvent and brush on a gel style stripper carefully onto the blade. I personally don't like the look of that so I strip the whole thing but then patina the whole thing too (including the tang) to give it some protection. As long as you're scales are on tight and you try to wipe it off after use (and maybe take the scales off and wipe everything dry after big outings) you should be fine.

Be careful though because this one dude on here stroked his BK-15 so much that not only did the finish come off, but he also turned the handle transparent.
