But I would absolutely love to visit Nepal and be able to not only visit the country but also to visit the Kami's and thank them in person for the things they make. I dunno. I just think I'd have more fun watching their work that doing the usual tourist things.

Your day dream could be more common than you imagine. :)

I have had similar thoughts over the last year, and over time here getting to see Yangdu's photo's and read her stories plus finding out a hint of the biography's of the Kami's, it makes it feel as if it would be like going to see friends.

To be able to personally thank a specific Kami's for the pleasure that their blade making skills have given would indeed be a pleasure and a privilege. :D

It is a lovely dream, but it may be only a dream. :(

From the HI website:
"There is now a "visit by invitation only" policy in effect and it is strictly enforced. I was in the shop one day when a stranger popped in to look around and he was told in no uncertain terms that his presence would not be tolerated. Ten kamis with hammers and khukuris in their hands make for a very strong argument. He left immediately and it was back to work as usual."

Ya know, you can always write a letter. ;):D

Here's a thought: let's just have HI film a short movie about the shop's operations, a kind of home-brewed documentary, an expansion of the photos that they took. Then they can sell it on the site for a little bit.

This way, everyone wins: we can see a bit of how the shop works, the kamis don't get interrupted, and HI makes some more money.

Well, certainly, the presumption would be to make introductions well in advance, have everything cleared and then visit when appropriate. I figured it would be about the same as going to S&W or Colt.

Well whichever one of y'all that gets there first please find the wood model of the YCS Awl and whittle a proper point back on it!!!!  :D

For the life of me I can't figure out how the point got broken off that model as it was full size and made out of Honey Locust which is both strong & tough!!!!  :(

.

Seems like I recall a forumite actually going to visit Nepal and even beforehand they were told they couldn't visit the HI shop.

Maybe I'm wrong on that but I THINK I remember that.
