Maybe not as bad as I thought.

The 'new' Opinel's locking ring that is.

When Opinel changed the design of the locking ring, I hated it. I was ready for a jihad. a lifetime and then some boycott. I called down curses on the Opinel in charges and his family all the way back to the era of Charlemagne. I was ready to storm the Bastille. Off with their heads! But then, I don't like change. I hate change.

When Volkswagen stopped making the old air cooled bug, I cursed the ruling heads at Volkswagen all the back to Doctor Porsche and the birth of the 'Peoples Wagon'.

Way back in 1972ish when Ruger changed the design of their single action revolvers, to the 'new' design that let you carry all six chambers loaded, I hated Ruger. That lasted a few years until I relented and bought a "new' model super single six, that led to the new model convertible .357/9mm Blackhawk. I ended up back with Ruger and to this day have a Ruger revolver that is a regular carry gun. I stayed with a Zippo lighter for decades in spite of it running out of fuel at inopportune times, burning my leg with fluid over flow in a warm pocket, and being a PITA. It wasn't until I was darn near social security age that I deserted the fold and went with the reliable Bic lighter. It took a guide named Jose in the middle of some Costa Rican jungle to convince me that the Bic was a better deal.

Sooooo, for the last few months I've been fooling with a fairly new number 6 Opinel. I was looking for something more compact than my old well used number 8, and a little bigger than my non locking number 5. I did some initial cursing, but after a few months of semi regular use, its been growing on me. I still think its a PITA that the locking ring is a one way affair, and if I wan't so stubborn and had a dremal tool I would be tempted to do some grinding. But in real world actually use, since I very rarely use the lock, it hasn't been too bad on my stubborn psyche. It's still an Opinel, and they still cut like the dickens. And they still have that weird old world charm like a Citroen 2VC. Funky in a cool old way.

I guess this my be a long winded way of apology to the ancestors of whatever Opinel is sitting at the head of the table at the Opinel head shed over in France. I still like my old number 8 way better, but the new stuff ain't bad for something a lawyer had meddled in. And it still does cut like the dickens.

I agree. I never lock my No. 8 closed, but the new lock is not that bad. Not like the locks on revolvers that were mandated about 25 years ago. They were really ugly on the S&W's. At least Ruger hid the lock so you couldn't see it.
To use a youthful expression: Opinel rocks!

Joseph Opinel forgives you, he'll put his knife away now.

I really need to pick up an Opinel myself actually never have handled one myself.

Good to know. Been thinking about a stainless no 6 but hesitated due to the new lock. Ya, I know, it won’t break the bank...

few people like change even when arguable positive. I don’t know anyone who likes a downgrade.

You won't regret it. Opinels are slicing demons.

I regularly carry a No 6 stainless. Not only is it a supreme slicer, it is a knife that I can hand to a non-knife person who asks to borrow a knife, knowing that if they do some damage it won't be hard to bring it back to a sharp edge, and if they destroy it I won't break the bank replacing it. And I have a stainless No 8 in my lunch bag to cut the fruit I eat every day.

I am kicking my self. I bought a lot of Opinel a few years ago. One had a cracked locking ring. They don't sell them, but some one contacted told me or order a knife and they would add a locking ring to the package.

I guess I probably waited too long! The new lockinf rings are here.

Oh... you really need to get a 7 or 8 in carbon steel... people don't lie when they talk about the slicing ability of these simple knives. Problem is, I think they have gone up in price... I think they are about $18 now.... :D

Decade by decade, ever since deep into the 1800s, handwork of all kinds has gradually diminished to the point of extinction (almost). Aesthetics have certainly suffered greatly, function maybe not so much. We all see the loss of the old beauty with sadness. I must confess that I was glad to see my 1949-1950-1951-1952-1953 Chevy pickup finally go away. My S&W revolvers from back in the day are NOT going away, and neither are some of my older knives. Well... some of them might be available... I am running out of space.

Wait a sec, a new locking ring? When did this happen?

I started out in with the carbon ones, but someone gave me a stainless, and I found out that the stainless actually holds an edge a wee bit better, and doesn't make the food taste weird. That Opinel stainless is some good stuff!

Just wack the pivot so its a snug fit and use the ever loving dog poo outa it. Generations of French folks used them long before Marcel added the ring in 1955, and the Sardinians never had a lock or backspacing on their resssolza's.

I think I use the lock maybe a single digit percent of the time.

Good to hear! I think I'm about to try one with the Sandvik steel and hornbeam handle. Can't decide which color, though... probably red.

A No. 8 Carbon with two No. 6 Inox Opinels all purchased in the last month with another No. 8 but with Inox on the way. Not having an older style locking ring example to compare them to I can't comment on that but can say the locking rings on the pictured knives are not a problem.

I have to concur about the stainless steel opinel uses.

It is better at edge retention, and no harder to sharpen at all.
That's good to hear... I just ordered the red hornbeam one... Might have to get a green one, as well. These are #8's, which are generally a little larger than I like for an Opie, but if nothing else, they should be great at kitchen/utility stuff.

I was glad to read some of these posts. I am in the market to replace a couple opinels and I was curious about the new locks as I had never handled an knife with them. Put my mind at ease to hear several members say they weren't an issue after hearing how bad they were from some. Now to see who has some choices in stock

There are locks on revolvers now (I haven't owned or fired one since the late 1980's)??!!!
