So i'm sure most of you have seen my kydex sheath i picked up for my bk11 last year

as I am guessing most of you know, the sheath is Kydex...and apparently kydex doesnt do well in extreme heat
i live in mississippi...and its august. So i decided to take my bk11 out of my emergency truck kit and check it for rust and lo and behold i discover my kydex sheath is all warped and twisted, the retention is bad...and i start to get upset. Havent done anything with it since last year, but its sat in the truck in the heat all summer meh

then i think about it for a minute and take it into the bathroom and bust out my wifes hair drier, turns out it DOES get hot enough to make the kydex soft enough to work with. so i got it straightened out, now just trying to get the top part right, enough retention to keep it from falling out, but loose enough to actually GET the knife out when i want.

man, here is something i never thought about when i bought this sheath. Thought it may be good information for other folks thinking of what sheath they want to buy.

The nice thing about kydex is you can fix/adjust it with a little heat. One time I was using my bk2 to cut some onions and I left its kydex sheath right next to the pot I had boiling on the burner and I had the same problem but with a cheap heat gun I fixed it right up.

Pancake wont warp as much as taco because the rivets are placed while its in the correct shape, so it has less Play. Its one of the reasons that I prefer Pancake that and more attachment points.

A friend left a sheath on his dashboard, in August, in the sun, in Tennessee and it was ruint, I tell you RUINT........

Thanks for the reminder !!!!!........

All Best....

Wow...Never had any problems with sheaths melting before but thanks for the heads up man. It gets stupid hot here in Australia in summer so this might be a potential problem. Especially since I store my knives in a metal cupboard outside my house.

well, not so much melted as warped
heat makes it soft and when it gets hot enough you can actually mold it with your hands

mine is in a little emergency bag i keep in my truck, somehow the whole sheath got sorta...twisted
its straightened out now, but the retention isnt what it was :/

Yeah true, warped is probably a better word, I make kydex sheaths myself anyway. I find if the kydex gets to hot it starts to become shiney and crincle around the edges. I guess when it becomes summer time I'll drop one of my sheaths outside and see what heppens.

If its going to be kept in the truck you can always find a way to insulate it, maybe a cheap My little pony lunch bag :D
