here is the blade I bought about a year ago from this company. I just wanted to try to make a knife like the picture I saw in my head. Very simple, no frills just put a handle on it and finished the wood. It just occured to me that maybe I was supposed to finish the steel in some way as well!! Didnt know anything at all when I made it and barely do now. Do I need to finish it? How do I do this?

Any help would be much appreciated for I got lucky and made a lovely knife, which is one of my favorite possesions. I want to make sure it lasts quite some time, maybe even pass on to children or grand children!!

I will try to post the link bear with me.

Anybody know where to find a suiting sheath for this period style knife. I made one for it that looks very nice but the leather was from a hobby shop and is more like baseball glove leather than knife sheath material. I have seen people at buckskinners festivals with sheaths for knives of this sort that are very thick and hard, and the knife will draw with a secure "shwuck" sound. the sheath I made is ok but it cant go for more than a year I would guess before its gonna give up> thanx for any help!!!!!

"shwuck" ????? where do I come up with this stuff?

Im new too,,,so,,I dont know,,,

But given that it's looks like it should be like an older blade of the wild west,,,then I would guess that just some wet/dry sand paper could be a way to do that.

The knife looks like it is ment to do lots of heavy work...so I would not try to do a finish that shows every little scratch...

Now as for a good sheath for it?....well,,I have no idea if there is just one sheath that looks the best with that design of blade,,,But I have learned how to make a Fowler/Pronghorn type sheath,I use leather I get at a leather shop in my town,,,I had no idea there even was a store like that in my town until I looked in the phone book,,and Ed gave me a pattern to use when I make the thing, and I have really enjoyed the way he has helped me learn the stitching...

I will send you a link to the stiching that i do...

I haven't worked with that particular blade blank, but I have done others from Jantz. There were all "pre-finished" - meaning you didn't have to do anything to the blade part...unless...you had another finish in mind?

I wouldn't worry about getting scratches on it. The more the merrier if you ask me. Handmade knives beg to be used and used hard.

Best wishes - that's a pretty nice blade.

DaQo,

I gotta tell ya, I am really impressed with that sheath page of yours you posted a link to. By gosh I think you're going to be a real knife maker !!
