Hi,

I wonder if you guys and girls could give me some help in choosing an EDC. I've narrowed it down to these two knives. The Buck Mayo TNT and the Buck Strider mini spearpoint.

I live in the United Kingdom where I'm afraid to say sporting goods shops are becoming rare, so it's pretty impossible to have a look at these two knives side by side in the flesh.

I've carried a Buck 110 for 22 years now and it's seen a lot of use, I love it dearly and it will still be carried in a coat pocket but I fancy something new with a pocket clip so that I can carry it discretely day in day out. It'll be used for everything from slicing boxes, cutting string, whittling, skinning, and even food preparation.

Which one of these do you reckon would be best suited to my needs, what do you reckon on the fit and finish and which do you think is the stongest of the two?

I have to say I prefer the look of the Mayo but the price of the Strider ;) . C'mon guys give me your thoughts on these two and help me make the right choice.

Cheers,

Tony

Tony,

As far as strength is concerned I would have to give the edge, (no pun intended), to the Mayo. I base my opinion on the titanium scales and the fact that it is a frame lock instead of a liner lock. The Mayo utilizes a higher grade steel as well. The Strider is more of a tactical style while the Mayo has a smoother, more stramlined design. I currently have two of the Mayo's and have been VERY pleased with their performance. I like the Strider but I love the Mayo. It really comes down to a matter of personal preference. I don't think you would be greatly disappointed with either knife. Both are of the highest quality, but my nod would have to go to the Mayo.

Hope this helps,

Brian

The mini strider is like carrying around a rectangular piece of brick, and approximately that comfortable. The Buck is way better. Unless you prefer to use and carry bricks.

Buck Mini Strider is far stronger- no comparison. Built for hardcore users, EDC for a Marine, not an office worker.

Buck Mayo TNT- Higher end blade steel- very smooth action and nice ergonomics. A great "suit" knife.

I carry both depending on what I am doing/ wearing.

For general daily tasks I feel the Mayo a more suitable knife.

If the price is too much for the 172, the 173 might be more to your liking.

My two cents,

Josh

How did you narrow it down to these two knives? The two have little in common.

I own both and find I am only carrying the Mayo. The difference here is that the Buck Strider is MUCH wider in the pocket. It also grabs like sandpaper, both in hand and in pocket. If you are in sloppy conditions and grip is very important, or if blade toughness might be an issue the Strider would have an edge. For me Mayo fits a much larger set of circumstances and therefore gets the use.

for in pocket carry, I'd lean toward the TNT, I took the clip off my Mini , reprofiled the blade a bit thinner and carry it in a belt sheath.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I think it's going to be the Mayo.

Gary Hudson, How did I whittly it down to these two well... To be honest I have a little spare cash and wanted a new EDC. I wanted to get a Buck, I've carried a 110 for years and wanted to stick with the company.

I heard good things about the Striders and Tom Mayo walks on water as far as I'm concerned :D. Problem was I've not seen either of these knives for real hence this question. I had a feeling the Mayo TNT would be better for my needs but I thought best to ask about the stider before dismissing it.

To be honest if I had the cash I'd like to buy both, but then how many times has that been said before.

Anyway tnaks for your time.

Cheers,

Tony,

Buying both is always a good choice if you have the option. :D

I think you'll be more than happy with your choice. It's a great knife from a great company.

G.

There is one on BST now for a great price if they will ship to the UK.

Good luck.
