Hello all. I've been very busy with things non-knife-related and haven't posted for quite a while now. Thought I'd start a "Mayo" thread. I bought this Tom Mayo TNT last summer, brand new from a dealer. It's a fantastic knife, very precise, very smooth, very well designed. It's not a "tank", it's a cutting instrument, which is one of the things that sets Tom's knives apart from the crowd. In my opinion, very few makers care enough or have the necessary skill to build framelocks at this level. I feel quite proud to own it. It's also a reminder of my friend, Tom Haas, who introduced me to Mayo knives years ago. Let's get some posts from the Mayo folks.

Pete

Here's my contribution - TNT w/ Thomas Damascus & a Covert in 6K.

Don't carry either one as much as I should not that they are not great knives,
I have 3 RJ Martins that I can't seem to stop using!

AV8R, I agree that there is something very special about Mayo folders.

Here is a pic of my Mayo XL TNT Damscus. Tom believes the damascus was made by MS Ed Caffery. I should probably set up a light box to take cool pics. Tough to catch how nice the damascus is.

VERY nice...all of them.

For those that use them, it would be interesting to hear about edge holding, etc.

I currently own 2 tnts. both have talonite blades.

For almost a decade I have carried one of them almost every day. They are quite thin compared to many "tactical folders" and the clip is secure but does not damage your pocket. The bead blast on the frames is quite durable (much more so than the sebenza coating) and they still look pretty good even after years of banging into keys etc

The edge Tom puts on them is convex and polished. I find talonite easy to sharpen but could never reproduce the makers edge. I would not chop hard items with them . I gutted a fish with one, the edge was fine but getting all the goop out was a challenge. For routine cutting tasks the edge is great. I freshen it up maybe once or twice a year on spyderco sticks.

I have been waiting a few years for Tom to make a small TNT with a stainless steel for me. I will be curious to see how it performs.

Here are my Mayo's. The fixed blade has a BG42 blade and a bed liner handle coating put on by the previous owner. The Large TNT has a Devon Thomas ladder pattern Damascus blade. The med TNT is S30v. The TMX has Tom's 25th anniversary logo and CPM 154 blade. I had an older TNT with a Talonite blade that I foolishly sold a while ago. :(

Very nice. I've always thought that TMX looks like just about the perfect EDC.

Tom made each one of these for me, the first was the Dr. Death, the other two, more or less, delivered a few years ago at Blade....If you never met him, Tom is super approachable, very humble person, and excellent craftsman.

The top one is a Dr. Death(my third, and this one is the keeper), blade marked "154V".

Middle one is an EDC soon to be retired....it's great, but I almost lost it, and that ain't happening.

Last one is Tom's current Wharncliffe model. It's beautiful.

None of these are for sale...ever...please don't ask.

A knife that Tom made for my son recently, who saved up quite a while for his first Mayo folder. The addiction seems has been passed down to the future generation.

peterinct -edge holding is really good because of the profile that Tom puts on a blade and the heat treat. I regret selling the large S90v I had - that thing would cut forever without sharpening.

I've got a couple from Tom.....been trying to get another ordered from him for going on 7 years now but I've had zero luck.....maybe one of you folks that he listens to could give me a hand. ;)

I don't understand how you guys get all these mayos since he doesn't take orders. Am I missing something?

Much of the time, you will have an opportunity to pick them up on the secondary market. The customs for sale forum here is a prime place to buy Mayos. There are others too, but often Mayos are listed on more than one forum.

Tom doesn't take orders in general...BUT....if you catch him at the right time, if he agrees to take an order from you, and you stay on top to things....you will get your knife...there are a lot of "ifs".
