How does one go about getting a Mayo folder (TNT or TMX) if he cannot go to the Blade show. Am I out of luck or is there some other way to get one? (Other than wait forever and possibly get lucky enough to buy one second hand for over msrp)

Look no further than the first page of the 'Custom's for sale by individual' forum. There is a TMX in there for sale that is mint.

Jim's suggestion is a good one.

It is also possible to get aquainted with someone going to Blade and ask them to try to pick one up for you. :D

(That kind of thing happens a lot ;).)

I'll chime in and say that the price on the TMX is reasonable (and I have no stake in this sale).
Good luck

Tom was at BAKCA last year. If you can't make Blade but can make BAKCA, you might be able to score something from him there this year if you get there on time for the show opening, assuming that he goes this year, of course.

Oh man that's annoying. Of course I just bought a knife and the TMX comes up. I just bought a Rick Hinderer XM-18, so I do not have $600 to spend on a knife right now. I guess I'll try to get someone going to blade to pick one up once I get the money together.

Sorry I'm not interested. I've been looking forward to owning this knife for a while and look forward to using it as a hard user.

and I am loath to do business with them either. Have fun with your Hinderer.

Just offering you a possible solution for getting that Mayo TMX. If you'd rather keep the XM-18, no problem at all.

What part of the country are you from?
What do you do?
What do you like?
What have you done.

Who are you in a very short synopsis?

For instance, if "runger" had a rough geographical profile , maybe some of us could make suggestions on who he could talk to that might already have the knife that he wants, or who could help him if he cannot go to Blade.

If he already has that covered, than why post the question in the first place?

Frankly, unless there is something so fantastic about THIS Hinderer that I do not know, I would take the Mayo over it in a heartbeat. Tom Mayo just makes a better knife, and I have handled both. So much so that I would not even put them in the same category. I can confidently say that Tom is at the top of the food chain with the TNT's in the tactical market, with a few peers, but no superiors.

... fair enough.

Not American at all; I'm from about as far west and south as you can go in Canada - Vancouver Island.

I started my knife interest fairly recently, and my likes/dislikes are in constant flux.

Currently, I'm liking forged knives (fixed), but I've started moving my focus to folders, too.

Why part with my TMX? I foolishly forgot to state my preference for tip-up carry, so I'm waiting for a tip-up TNT to come along - I'm starting to think that these are as rare as unicorn sightings.

As for Bladeforums - thanks to hanging out here I got to meet Roger P., who introduced me to Murray White, who was kind enough to show me his collection ... and so it goes.

I've never handled either, but the price alone tells me that either a.) it's better or b.) Mayo is more well known. Even if it is better, I don't think I am quite ready to drop $600 on a knife that I'm going to abuse. Maybe later when I have more $$ I can buy it as a lighter use knife.

I made a direct apples to apples comparision of two knives being discussed. If you have a differering opinion, than highjack this thread, or start a new one.

Just don't leave it dangle though, that is so nutless.

Please let us know which knives you consider to be superior. Making a statement like that serves no purpose whatsoever. I'm not saying there aren't knives better than the TNT, but if you are going to make a statement like that, back it up with examples.

Steven, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the statement regarding the comparison of the quality of Mayo and Hinderer knives. I've owned, carried and used about 10 each of Rick's and Tom's knives, and handled dozens of others by each of them, and I've found the build quality to be very similar between the two. If anything, from the roughly 20 pieces that I've owned by the two makers, I've found the build quality on the Hinderers to be slightly more consistent. Perhaps these 20 pieces are not a large enough representative sample, but my experience with them is different enough from your statement above so that people reading this thread should be aware of a variant opinion.

I have the utmost respect for both makers and their work, as well as for you, Steven, and I have absolutely no problem with people saying one's work is better than the other's. However, saying that Rick's work isn't even in the same category as Tom's seems like an unfair exaggeration to me.

Now please I don't want anyone attacking me.

I like Mayo's knives, I have owned 2 and handled quite a few.

I own a Hinderer folder, not sure if I'd go so far as to say a Hinderer and a Mayo are in 2 different categories.

I have owned a few Mike Zcherny folders that were superior, IMO to a TNT, in fit and finish, function and ergos.

For me a Strider SMF is a superior knife to a TNT, (for the different jobs I need a knife to do) better grip, feel, ease of indexing.

These are just my opinions and I'm not bashing Tom Mayo, he makes one hell of a knife.

HAHA...if its a apples to apples comparison please do give us reasons for your statements....leaving us hanging is so nutless! BTW, Tom and I are really good friends and I have nothing but good things to say about his work..if you want to learn more about the XM-18 and what it can do as a tactical folder go to my website and look at the tests I've put it through...including using it as a throwing knife...anyway, I really dont need to post hear to defend my work..I just thought your statement was amusing..
