MBH: Main Battle Hawk. You know...like the steel butt plate on an M1...or the steel plate on the shoulder end of an FAL. Run out of ammo? No worries, 'cause you can always beat the enemy to death with your MBR. :)

Oh! Happy thought indeed!

I'd like to add a steel cap to the end of one of my hawk hafts: maybe one or one and a half inches tall...kinda like a form fitted steel cup at the end of the haft.

Any ideas on how one might fabricate such a "haft-cap?"

Ideas fellas! I NEED IDEAS!

It's just a matter of time before vec shows up.

Seems to me you could drill a hole in the haft, and use a bolt to attach a steel cap or plate. Maybe get a threaded pipe cap at the hardware store, and cut the haft to fit inside. Combine that with yer bolt, and there you go....

The thought crossed my simple mind that only with a manufactured haft (such as Vec crafts) is such a steel end-cap possible because such a cap can be fabricated to an exact size (as can a vec haft). But there goes my MBHCAP idea...stolen...by vec!

Thats a good idea...
One thought is to have a machine thread on one end for the metal and wood screw threads on the other for the haft.
Two would be possably to have some sort of strap on each side flush so not to get uncomfortable when gripping.
Three some sort of a dowel for just gluing together....
Remember photos when done......

Okay...I'm over it...Vec can steal my idea...IF...IF...he names it "The HaftQap Option!"

if you have access to a forge or just a torch, you might find a piece of pipe slightly larger than the diameter of the end of you hawk handle. heat a piece of mild steel plate, circular and a little larger in circumference than your hawk handle. use a ball peen hammer to force the plate into the end of the pipe, thus making it a cylindrical cup pretty close to the size you need. i would heat fit it to the handle then quench to really stick it on there. drill a hole or two and drive a good size pin, steel or brass might look good to, and there you have it. this is just speculation as i have never done this but its what im going to try on the spear shaft im working on when i get the spearhead HT and ready to attach. hope this helps. you might research how butt caps were put on spear shafts and polearm shafts in olden times. hope this helped, good luck and let us know what works.

i've been thinking a bit about aluminum butt caps of some sort, and also inertial bodies on some of the VN hawks i am trying to get done.

i always try to make something special, to say "Thanks for your patience!" to the Investors.

i'd also like to get some end caps, as brother Q is suggesting, and put them on the end of sheaths, so you could use the sheaths as a secondary weapon, like a war club.

then there's the razor boomerangs with the bludgeon tips ...a heck, i gotta get back to work....

lookwhatchadid!

I'm voting for thick walled aircraft aluminum. humble opinion is steel or brass is going to be too heavy. I like the idea of a cap on the head end,a short section(4-5") behind the head(overstrike protection) and a butt cap of the same material..anodized dark and maybe knurled.. Dang it VEC!!! You're making me drool on the keyboard again!

Take a pice of material, steel, aluminum, brass, whatever.
Drill it out with drill bit so that another a piece of material that can be soldered into that hole.

Drill out that piece and tap the whole.

Solder skinny threaded piece B, into heavy wide piece A. With about an inch of piece B sticking out of piece A.
(Clear as mud? I need a pic to demonstrate dont I?)

(This is how I do "butcaps" for hidden tang knives with threaded tangs. The threaded tang is actually a modified 1/4-20 allen head bolt, but that is a seperate story.)

You now have a heavy attachment ready to screw into/onto haft.

The problem becomes attaching a recessed screw into the haft. But you could do this and instead of having to tap a hole, you could either thread it or pin it to the haft.

Just an idea for those who dont have enough to do already... Maybe I need to try this... :o

Im in the process of moving out of my 2 bedroom apt into a house.
My 2nd bedroom was my shop. Now I have a garage.

Everything I have is in boxes or disassembeled into movable pieces.
Let me think about where, or how I can get a picture of this.

I too like the idea of having a "end keeper" or "buttcap" on the base of a battle ax.

Dont have a battle ax, but maybe I will have to change that too. Have a CS Halberd, kind of scary that it cuts coming and going.

Maybe I should get a CS War Hammer and mod the base of that and put together a tutorial once I get moved in.
Hmmm... warping pretty little minds via the internet. Not an origional idea, but this other idea could be.

Somebody say something about End Caps or was i just hearing the voices in my head again

me likey. only problem I can forsee is if your haft breaks and you have to move this to another, fit could be off. alternatively you could make it a wierd shape like a ball or a octogon then it wouldnt matter.
