Hi, this is my first post and it will be a review of the Master Cutlery Terminator Salvation fixed blade knife used by John Connor during the movie.
Firstly, I'm not a huge fan of movie knives and this is my first movie knife. The reason for this review is that I can't find any proper reviews on the Internet and I think some people are curious about if this knife if it's really usable, in that manner that it has some skin and muscles. So firstly. The knife is 8" and the blade is 3 1/2". The blade is full tang one hell of a tough slab of steel. It does not have weight relief holes, so it's quite heavy (haven't weighted it yet, but I can guarantee it's heavy for its size.
The steel is 440 and it's not mentioned if it's A,B or C, but I believe it's A. It has G-10 slabs on each side, which I find a great plus since it's strong and highly resistant against the elements. It also has a crappy leatherwrapping on the handle's and, completely useless since it's glued. The most impressive thing about this knife is its thickness, over 5 mm.! So this knife will function quite nicely as a mini-prybar (have tried it, it works!). The sheath is a nylon composite sheath with a mediocre lock-up. One knob on each side of the sheath's upper part dig into the screwholes, so it will wear pretty fast.
I haven't used the knife so much that I can give a complete review of the its edge retention, but I have sharpened the knife and it's very sharp, it comes quite sharp out of the box too. I don't know the knife's hardness (RC), but I think it's adequate for smaller tasks. I have used the knife on some hardwood and it held up suprisingly good. It will function well as an EDC if weight isn't an issue for you.
The ergonomics are good, in my opinion. The knife has aggressive jimping on the spine and it is compact and very solid. The fingerchoil is deep and the handle curves so it positions itself better in the palm. You will get a very firm grip and doing small tasks is very easy with this knife. The handle is small, so for you people with large hands, it may be a problem. The only minor complaint I have about the ergonomics is the sharp edges from the tang. The handle scales should have covered the whole side of the tang, but this will only be a huge problem if your skin is made out of biblepaper.
This knife is incredibly tough and good luck breaking it. The tip is reinforced and as strong as a tanto-tip, it not even stonger. I have handled a Strider and I can tell you that this knife is as tough! The only weak areas on this knife are the small torx-screws which hold the g-10 slabs on the tang. They are small and difficult to remove, but they will hold up since they are attached to a inner cylinder in the tang. As I mentioned before, the tang does not have any weight relief holes, so it's a bit heavier than it would be with holes. But this adds overall strengh, which I love.
The only bad thing I have to say about this knife is the sheath. The build-quality is good, but it does not have any attachment (because it's meant to be a neck-knife). I would not use this as a neck-knife because of its weight and somewhat "over time" weak lockup. I had a nylon beltclip with a strap from a Cold Steel sheath, so I attached it to this sheath, and it works great now. The sheath has a lot of holes, so it's quite modular. A teklok would be great, but tekloks are none-existent here in Norway.
All in all, this knife really surprised me and I really underestimated it. But remember, this is what I think, some of you won't like it. Great ergonomics, takes an edge and built like a tank, this knife means buisness. This is also a great addition to you Terminator-fans, since the logo his laser-engraved, it won't disappear easily. It's somewhat expensive, but hey, when have signature items been cheap? This is really just a quality knife with the Terminator Salvation logo. If you want it, I would recommend that you give it a try. I have used it a lot already and it has not let me down yet. I have handled a lot of knives in my life and this is one of the better ones I have used. Btw, this knife shares a lot of similarities with the Benchmade HK 14100 knife, so it's not a new and "just for looks"-design. Sorry for any English-mistakes
have a nice day!
bye
