I'm happy, and it makes a good 100th post!

also, how would you test the sharpness of a knife? I can cut paper with both, and I can scratch shavings off my fingernails without applying pressure, what should I do to determine the sharpness?

I just bought the spyderco tri-angle sharpener, is it advisable to sharpen a knife right out of the box?

Congrats on both recieving the knives and your 100th post :). You chose some fine knives. Testing sharpness is dependent upon how sharp you like it, not anyone else. Some guys/gals "need" their knives to be able to cut a single sheet of paper thats been rolled up into a tube and stood up tall, in half without the bottom half moving.

My suggestion on sharpening: If your skills aren't very good, you'll most likely dull the edge. Try practicing your skill first on some not so important knives.

I would agree with ig. Practice does make perfect. Sharpness is something that you will gain a new appreciation for as you begin to sharpen your own knives. If your knives can slice newsprint without leaving jagged edges then I would say they are probably sharp enough for now. ENJOY!!:D :D

Shaving sharp is the way I like mine, I just shave a little patch on the underside of my fore-arm (you can to it on top of the fore-arm too, but then your going to look funny). I never been impressed with cuting paper personally. I will sharpen them only if they can not shave hair out of the box.

Mcusta Kasumi: very good lookin little knife. Smaller than I had anticipated and thinner too, but on inspection I think it will serve as the perfect edc. It looks like the lock is thin, but I have my Tomcat for more intense use. The tomcat is much larger than I expected. 3.75 inches is alot bigger than I had thought. It is, however, very nicely balanced and its blade is remarkably thick.

I'll post some pics of my edc stuff here:

I show the flashlights because my l2d ce came in the mail today as well.

I apologize for the poor image quality, my phone doesnt take the best pictures :D

As I sit here playin with my new knives (cutting apples and such) I am forced to ask: what's the deal with the ridges on the back of the tomcat's blade? They can't be functional, right? are they aesthetic or something?

there so you don't slip if you were to use your thumb to push on the back of the blade (imagen trying to take the bigest bite out of an object as posible)

Congrats on the knives. I recently bought a Mcusta knife as well, and think it is great.

With regards to sharpening, it just depends on what you are looking for. A highly polished edge will be better at push cutting paper, but will not do as well at cutting things like rope. It is good to practice your sharpening, and also to start reprofiling.

Reprofiling knives to thinner angles can greatly increase their sharpness, as most angles that knives come with are probably too thick for most people's intended purposes. I would recommend something other than the Sharpmaker for removing lots of metal at a time, though.

I hope you enjoy your Mcusta as must as I have enjoyed mine. Mine was wickedly shaving sharp right out of the box, and remains so to this day...

squirrel, how does the tomcat feel in your hand? Reference to the kraton handles. Does the kraton feel like it is molded over a harder substance or are the grips kraton all the way through? Still think you got two super knives there!!

The kraton is on very solid feeling metal. The metal under the kraton is about 1.5 mm thick. From what I can see, it has no obvious weaknesses or vulnerable spots. The handle seems extremely grippy. I would think that if I were cutting with it I would probably scrape my hands before I lost my grip (though I dont know what would happen if it got wet)
