MCusta: Any Thoughts?

Has anyone heard of MCusta? It’s a knife company out of Seki, Japan. (Here’s their crappy website.) I’m not sure if they’re new or not: they’ve probably manufactured knives for other companies at some point. I first noticed them just a few months ago and I’ve already bought a couple of their knives. I really like them. Actually, I’m carrying both of them right now!

All of the MCusta knives that I’ve seen are liner locks with VG-10 blades and nice scale materials. A specialty of theirs seems to be damascus blades with a VG-10 core. They offer a variety of models, from pretty plain “tactical” folders to smaller gentleman’s knives with fancy damascus handles. Their “katana” series, with San Mai blades, looks pretty neat too, even though the whole “tanto” thing has been kind of played out.

The knives that I have are a Take and a Basic. The Take (pic below from A.G. Russell) has a damascus handle that’s shaped to resemble bamboo (“take” means bamboo in Japanese). It seems to be a pretty popular model. The Basic (photo from Universal Cutlery) is bigger: longer and thicker. Several different materials are used for the scales on this knife. The one I own has Micarta scales.

Fit and finish on these knives is pretty good: could be better, but not bad at all. The designs are very cool and they make good users. One thing I have to mention is that these knives are sharp. They are noticeably sharper out of the box than pretty much anything else I’ve seen.

When I tried a search, it didn't turn up much on MCusta. Maybe they just recently started selling in the US or something. I think I’ll probably buy one or two more of their knives in the future though and check out some other models.

I really like their designs, and was thinking of picking up the one you show from A.G. Russell's.(damascus blade and handle) The prices are pretty high on A.G.'s site, but you can be assured of great service, so it's worth it.

I agree that the MCusta site needs some work. Not enough info.

I'm sure it won't be long 'til more dealers will be carrying their work, as the quality definitely looks good. Thanks for the mini veview. I'll move the Take up a little on my list of things to get.

I am also interested in the mcusta folders. How good are the edge holding ?

The Mcusta knives are made by Seki-Cut, or at least distributed by them, I believe. However, the case may be, I bought 2 of them at Blade in June. One with simple San-Mai, the other with the outer layers of multi-layered damascus.

I gotta tell ya, I have nothing but good to say about these knives. The steel is top-quality, the designs are quite pleasing, they get the little details right (like double-sided thumbstuds).

Both blades were extremely sharp. The edge holds up quite well, and is easily resharpened on a Sharpmaker.

Helluva bang for the buck, in my opinion.

i've got one, and at first i was a bit desapointed has i find it too small...
but after some time, i get used of it and really start to appreciate it!
kindda "gentlemen folder" :)

and yes, it is really sharp "out of the box" and keep that edge enought for me !
Mcusta

mine is the third from the back.
