Mcusta factory seconds?

I have been wanting a Mcusta Tactility for at least 5 years. I finally got one today, and what a disappointment. It is the regular black micarta version. It has a horrible thin to ...............too wide grind on one side, and about a third of the thumb (deployment) hole area has a rough/uneven surface. These flaws are bad enough that I would have to disclose, and probably give a discount if reselling.
I have an old S30v Spyderco Native with these same exact issues. (no factory 2nd markings)
The Mcusta lock bar is a little sticky, and the handle has more sharp edges than I would expect from a $100+ knife. It feels/looks like a knife from a past generation, or two.
I was under the impression that Mcusta's fit/finish were top notch?
I can't find any markings for factory second, and I have never heard about any counterfeits.
I bought this from a reputable on-line source, so back it will go. My yearning for a Tactility is gone.:(

I don’t know what’s going on but I have heard many people complaining about the Tactility model in particular. There seems to be many fit and finish issues on some examples. I have seen other examples that are outstanding. I have heard of similar issues with the Katana model.

If you can return it and tell them to actually check the knife they send you this time I would do that.

Stangely both models I got, the Tanbo and Yoroi were perfect examples.

Some knives will have flaws from any manufacturer. My Mcusta came perfect and so did many others. You should ask for a replacement right away from where you bought it. Maybe you did buy a clone. Did you buy it from an authorized dealer?

Also I wouldn't expect quality from a $100 knife. It varies alot at that price point. But more often than not $100 is still budget depending on the materials and company. Mcusta is one of the best quality knives at that price though.

But don't expect every knife to come out of any company to be perfect at any price range. Shit I've seen customs that were over $500 not perfect.

Benchmade are the only one I see consistent qc issues with and they are even more expensive.

In any case just uploaded this vid of mine.

I spend upwards of 200-300 for knives for quality. Zt are a good example of quality. But even so they have lockbar/geometry issues. No one's safe theses days.

I haven't purchased a Mcusta in years so I can't speak towards their QC now ... but both mine were excellent F&F and I have always been happy with their knives ... I hope you get it resolved and get a good example of their work.

"Authorized dealer"? I doubt it. It is a big "Sports Store", not a knife store. They mostly specialize in gun accessories. If I asked them to check a knife before sending, I doubt they know know what to look for. I have had really good luck with them in the past.

Yea most stores won't check or if they do, they don't know what to look for. Some of the dealers here on the forum do though. Dlt trading, USA made blades, etc are some dealers that will inspect them before sending if you request. I'm not sure all the dealers that carries mcusta though.

Ive heard of some people buying knives from bass pro, Rei etc and returning the clone in its place and make out with a free knife and other people get burned when the clone is re sold. Might not happen often but still happens with popular models. Not likely to happen with mcusta though, it's not as well known. But China does make clones of them. The clones are pretty bad from what I've seen of them.

In my book, Mc Custa sucks because they make what everybody and their cousins does... Let's say globally there is a lack of (real) identity. I actually don't hate on the brand, they have potential, just don't up on it.

IMHO they are high quality budget knives. One of few that does vg10 San mai for a decent price and offer a variety of scale materials. A gentlemans tactical liner lock with precision. A clear distinctive Japanese style. Def not for everyone. I don't really use mine. Actions fairly stiff and it's too pretty to use, A good collector piece. I should have got the standard blade and scales, I think I would have used it more.

Not perfect? I've had a ~$1k custom show up that was outright defective from the maker.

After multiple expensive mistakes I have come to believe that quality generally goes up with price until somewhere around ~$400-500, and then it actually starts to go down.

For their price points I've been entirely satisfied with my Mcusta knives. My Tactility is great, though I did end up cracking the quincewood scale on one side (not Mcusta's fault--I dropped it). The worst I've had with a Mcusta was a Tsuchi small that had way too much lock bar tension and had to be bent back a bit to lighten it up before I was able to open it one-handed.

I wanted a mcusta, but saw about ten of them in a store once. I handled more than half, and they all had flaws that ruled them out for me: really uneven grinds, uncentered to the point of rubbing the liner, poor lockup. And I’m not a very picky guy, and I was motivated to get one.

I walked out empty handed, and haven’t bothered to look online. Too much of a crapshoot. I don’t doubt there are good examples, but you’re going to have to make sure you get one.

Got a full refund. I wish they were forum members so I could thank them for the great customer service.
