I'm thinking about getting my 1st damascus blade knife and found some good deals on several of these brand knives. I know they are more like laminated steel and not true damascus but need advice froma anyone who may have experience with them.

What I & others have written is that these are very well-made knives, I can't recall reading a negative comment. I have a Take and it has replaced all my other office knives, including a custom.

Okay, fair enough.
I have four of their line. They are top shelf folders for the money you pay for them.
The smaller ones make excellent gent's knives and the larger models make for great EDC folders. They are so good looking I get favorable comments from nearly everyone that sees them. Even your stereotypical soccer moms who tend to be fans of ultra-liberal shows like "The View" have made favorable comments about them. (I have several of these in my family.) These are the type of people who think anything that's sharp or shoots needs to be banned from existance. Poor deluded souls that they are...

Like Fishface, I've never seen a bad review on them. I have seen a whole lot of people who tried them and are very pleased with them.

Oh yes, and the edges these knives have is wicked. The core of the "damascus" is VG-10 which really rocks as a blade steel.

I'll also say that they are great knives. The blade is 'laminated' in that it has a core of VG10, but the outer steel is 'real' layered damascus, as opposed to steel that is etched to look 'damascus-like'. I love my Mcusta and hope to get a few more.

I have the Yoroi. Beautifully made and SCARY sharp.

"See that fly over there?"
"Yeah."
"Watch." <flicking with my Mcusta>
"You missed. It's still alive."
"True, but...it will never have children!"

I bought a small (2.5") damascus, bamboo handled folder a few months ago for very similar reasons to yours: I wanted a damscus blade. I have absolutely no regrets - the fit and finish of the knife is excellent and the VG-10, nickel damascus blade really stands out.

The damascus is pattern welded so it's real enough (although made differently from the "original" damascus back in the old days.)

Great posts and I agree with them all. It's hard to not brag on these knives because they really bring a smile to your face. Beautiful in styling and looks and awesome in their performance, it's really hard to find anything negative to say about them.

The Mcustas really are worth their price.

I have a Browning Ice Storm on its way and bought it because it was made by Mcusta and has a VG-10 blade. Any opinions on their quality?

I've tried. The search function never seems to work rite for me!!!! It usually just goes to a blank white page.

The search function here takes a bit of getting used to. Google uses an AND operator. This search function uses an OR operator, as in find posts with "first term" OR "second term" OR "third term". So you can get a lot of hits really fast. But if you get too many hits, it overloads the function and you get a white screen. So you need to limit your searches. Here are some tips:
Don't use words like blade, knife, or steel.
limit your searches to a single forum until you get a feel for how many hits your search gets.
Search titles only first. If you don't get enough hits, then you can try searching the entire posts.

So to apply these tips to this search, do this:
Click the search button.
On the pop-up, click "advanced search". You get a whole big screen.
Enter "mcusta" no quotes.
select "Titles only"
Select "Blade discussion forum"
Clear the "search subforums" box.

Go

You will find a fair number of posts.

Happy Reading.

hi jtallant ,
I fist bought a TAKE with laminated steel and steel handle and i was extremely pleased. the knife is a tad small but hefty, the edge is wicked and detail are extremely good. i also loved the blue anodized pin. no pocket clip but it came with a nice japanese looking soft sheath that looks kinda girly but fits considering where the knife comes from. also i usually carry it in my watch pocket.

a also bought a Katana model with a vg10 clad. tanto blade. i really liked this blade. the tanto angle is really open and to me works better for everyday cutting. the blade also looks amazing with the layers marking that looks sorta like a hamon. tha handle is anodized aluminum (two colors-great looking) and has a tip down clip.

only problem, i really do not like the plastic washers.

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE: i accidentally striped a screw while tightening the handle. i wrote to their office in japan and 12 hours later they sent to me a full set of screws (all of them) for the handle via priority mail (and for free) and this was from japan!

now mcusta has a small office for support here in portland oregon.
they were opening up while i contacted them in japan.

great guys. really. and their knives are a steal for the price.

i will buy more from them.

I just received my brand new MC13-D last week, and I must say that I really like it. This is my first non-Spyderco knife (unless you count my old SAK), but it's definitely going to be my EDC. The damascus blade and ebony scales are a lot more classy than the Manix or Native I was carrying. Since I'm about to start a new job at an office (rather than being on a receiving dock), I figured it would be a good idea to have something a little nicer. I also thought I'd treat myself for a job well done.

Anyway the knife is as sharp as any of my Spydies right out of the box, and the action is nice and smooth. I only have a few minor issues with my Mccusta right now. First, I'm not used to tip-down carry (very minor issue). Second, the blade grind is slightly uneven, especially near the tip. Third, the blade is not centered in the handle when the knife is closed. This is actually my first liner lock, so I don't know if this is normal or not. It's very close to contacting the liner in the closed position, but it isn't quite there. If I tighten the pivot screw at all, the knife becomes hard to open.

That said, I view my few issues as minor, and I really think that Mccusta knives are a fantastic deal. I'm certainly happy with mine, and it's a great addition to my small collection. I would definitely give the company my stamp of approval.

edit: Oh yeah, I've been reading for a long time but haven't really had a subject I could offer anything on until now. I've been learning a lot, though. :)

so, in general, how do the linerlocks of the Mcusta's compare to the one on the Kershaw Junkyard Dog2 , for example?

jaislandboy,

None of mine fail the dreaded "Spine Whack Test". They lock up tight and stay that way till I unlock'em. No slippage, no flex, no problems.
Mcusta makes a fine folder. I just wish they'd make a 4" blade model. I'd be ALL OVER THAT ONE! :D
