Mcusta Quality?

Hi all!

I've been eyeing Mcusta knives for a few months with regards to a nicely appointed gentleman's folder. Their knives are very attractive, but how is their fit & finish, especially the wood scaled models?

From a fit & finish standpoint, how would it compare to, say, a Spyderco Native 1? For reference, I briefly had a Lionsteel Mini which came close, but did not quite meet my overall standards in that regard.

I'd love to hear from some owners! Thanks!

My experience with Mucusta is limited to a sample of one that I'm very happy to have. The knife is extremely well made and should satisfy the most discerning knife affection-ado. I did choose to disassemble it and break all the edges with a stone as they had been left quite sharp for my taste. Other than that, it is near perfect and a highly valued favorite of mine which I truly prize.

I've read a few bad reviews, but have also read a bunch more good ones.
I am 2 for 2 in my personal experiences, no complaints. Both were great knives.

They have amazing fit and finish and quality. im down to just one mcusta now, i really wish i didnt buy it, just not my type of knife. it will forever stay in a drawer unless i sell it or give it away.

i would classify it as a high quality budget knife. im not a fan of budget knives in general, high or low quality.

they use black nylatron washers. if they were on PB washers with better action and better blade steel, i would then consider them again.

sharpest blade i had from the factory tho.

i bought it after watching youtube reviews, and didnt realize i wasnt going to like it until i got it, i feel like those YT reviews are sorta misleading, but then again half of them really are.

I am curious about these knives as well. Been thinking about getting one.

Hi! I only have two Mcustas and none of them have wooden scales so the sampling plan is far from representative, in order to say something definitive about it :). What I can say is I was (and still am) impressed with the overall quality, beauty, fit and finish, the workmanship and the sharpness these two I own came with . I can only say good things about my Mcustas :). I consider those truly gents folders, very nice in the look department, precisely assembled, well machined with tight tolerances, smooth in action and offered at a reasonably affordable price (compared to similar products). My long versions here:

I can suggest to get one and give it a chance :). I don’t think you’ll be disappointed . Worst case, if you buy from a reputable dealer, you can always send it back :)!

I don't have any of their wood handled knives, but I have a katana.

It came with scratches on the blade and some missing anodization out of the box. This not appear to be the norm, however.

I have two and both are excellent knives. Good f&f, came sharp. Both are damascus laminated VG10.

Based on several MCusta knives I've sharpened for others i have found their VG10 a bit on the softer side.
I don't own any myself although i like a few of their designs.

My only experience with them is with the mc4 katana. Mine was terrible, it had scratch marks on the blade the detent was non existant it came with the blade tip chipped and with dents on the handle.

I have two, the Take in Staminawood and the small Nami. Both are very well finished. I don't have a Native, but I do have a Caly 3, and can affirm that fit and finish are fine on the Mcusta knives.
There are some difficulties you should be aware of. The handle on the Take is small enough so it is difficult to open. The Take is a liner lock, but the small Nami is a frame lock. There is no way that I can open the small Nami with one hand. I just can't do it. It is a two handed opener with a stud on the blade. I should probably have returned it.
If you want one of the Mcusta knives, I would recommend their liner locks, but not the frame lock models, based on my experience. Fit and finish are up there. However, the detent is just two much in the small Nami. This is a shame, because it is a very nice looking knife-that sits on a drawer.

Nice smooth action, great flickers, great build quality and flat out sexy! The most amazingly sharp edges out of the box!

I just received my First Mcusta (not wood) and I am pleased with the fit and finish. It's kinda hard for me to explain, because while I feel that although the knife has a high quality fit and finish, it is in a different way than the knives that I am used to. The blade on mine does not fly open like other knives, but it does open smoothly, and with a feeling of quality IMO, just differently than I have experienced before. The knife seems beautifully finished, came screaming sharp, and looks amazing. The only complaint I have is that the lockbar has a noticeably sharp edge that becomes apparent upon closing. Also, I should add that this is not a knife that I intend to carry (tip down only , too small, etc.) but rather keep as a desk knife. In fact, I went ahead and removed the clip altogether. That being said, I can definitely see myself owning another, and I am happy with my purchase.

Love that pic my friend!!
Give it some time and fondle or flick away.....it will break in and open much faster!
Mine did.

I just have one, and oh boy what a nice little knife. Sure not beefy and prybarish but what a cute lil' devil.
I'll probably get another one down the road.

To be fair, there are no substantial knife companies that have received only good reviews. Every company once it gets past a certain size will have bad reviews (in every industry).

Exactly my point.

Both my purchases were online, I saw a design I liked, I did my due diligence before buying, decided to pull the trigger twice, and 2 for 2 I've been pleased with my decision.

Thanks everyone that's chimed in. Sounds like the majority have been pleased with overall quality & F/F. The Basic and the Kasumi have been taunting me.

I'm still on the fence (mostly due to way too many April/May purchases), but the strong reviews are weakining my resistance. They seem fairly reasonably priced, given the quality I'm hearing.

I'd still love to hear from others with experience. Like many, there's nowhere nearby that I can check one out in person.
