I've decided to pick up a MCusta Take, after looking around for info on them for some time. Can't decide between the handle options, though... Cocobolo, Ebony, or Damascus... Anybody recommend one over the other? Have positive or negative experiences with any of them? Have some decent photos?
Thanks!

Never handled them myself. One of the guys got the damascus handled version and felt it was too heavy for comfortable carry. The cocobolo is beautiful but I haven't seen the ebony.

I may be able to help with your decision. I have two MCusta's, a Kasumi with Damascus scales and an MC2 Basic with a cocobolo handle.

The Kasumi is about the same size as the Take and I think that the Damascus scales on a titanium frame make the knife a tad heavy for its size. Also it is a bit unbalanced toward the handle. That having been said the Damascus blade is hair popping sharp and I am very happy with it as a gentleman's knife.

The MC2 Basic has a beautiful and comfortable cocobolo handle that is very similar to the shape of the Take. The blade is also hair popping sharp out of the box and the knife carries very well.

I hope this info will help with your decision.

Dave

If they had had the cocobolo when I got mine, I would probably still have it.

That damascus handle is heavy. Relatively.

The blade, however, takes (pun) a wicked edge.

badum-tshhhhh! ;)

Well, thanks for the tips. I ordered a cocobolo Take this afternoon, after much agonizing over whether I should choose that or ebony. Thought about changing my order several times, but as luck would have it, I got a call from the courteous folks at knifeworks, who informed me that the cocobolo was back-ordered, but that they had and ebony in stock. Problem solved. :D
Can't wait to receive it; it's going to ride with me at my wedding () next summer, at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

congrats on the Take and the upcoming wedding puukkoman....i've wanted to get a cocobolo one myself (some day).....please post a review if you can....

Great news! (Congratulations on the wedding, too!) I would have been tempted by the ebony, not having handled any like it. But I don't think you could go wrong, either way. I mean, buying the knife or getting married. :p

I have a limited edition "cherry blossom" in cocobolo with damascus blade. The wood is first class, the knife opens and closes beautifully and is the sharpest out-of-the-box knife I have ever had.
The handles are very comfortable and slightly larger than usual for the blade size and therefore the knife is very precise in use.
Let us know how you like it. I'm considering another for daily use--the limited edition might turn into a 'drawer queen'.

Thanks. :)
I'll post a review of the knife once it arrives.
As for the new wife, no reviews will be forthcoming; gotta have some discretion. ;)

DAMN you, man. I am successfully RESISTING the unbearable urge to get one of those. They IS sharp though, ain't they?

But look....see.... ya have ta keep it in a POUCH or risk SCRATCHING it with yer pocket change. An who could stand that for long? Very few, I imagine.

I can take it off yer hands if ya see my reasoning.

:D

There are only two difficulties with your reasoning Lavan.
1 I usually carry my EDC's in a pouch, to avoid scratches. I also rarely put anything else hard in my Right Front pocket.
2 The Cherry Blossom COMES with a pouch.
Sorry I can't burden you with it. I'd hate to make your load any heavier. :)
Greg
If you really want a Cherry Blossom, hurry, they are going fast and are truly a serial numbered limited edition.

I have 2 Mcustas. Basic Folder in White Korian and Damascus in Ebony. Both are truly excellent for the money, simple beautiful and functional. The blade action is flawless and the edge KEEN:thumbup:

My source was japaneseknife direct.com they have a lot of eye watering stuff in fixed blades too, very courteous service and FAST delivery from Japan to the EU, so I'm sure delivery to the US would be swift too.

Mcusta is impressive:thumbup: Like all things Japanese made.

The Take is the one with the bamboo-shaped handles, right? I have one in all-damascus and it it outstanding. Only issue is the handle screws stick out a bit, I filed them down to be flush but it's tricky b/c it doesn't leave much screw-head left. Excellent gent's knife, can't imagine selling it.
