I realize that you guys probably get sick of seeing these things, but I still felt compelled to share

. I just picked this beauty up from the Post Office over the weekend:

As I’m sure you can tell, the knife is one of Jerry Hossom’s justly famous Millennium Bowies…a 12” blade of brushed ATS-34 (just a tad over 18” OAL) with a 416 stainless steel bolster and a wonderfully flame figured (stabilized) birch handle. I specified my preference an organic handle material and left the final selection to Jerry…I’m extremely pleased with his choice. The fit and finish on the knife are amazing and are among the best I’ve seen in custom cutlery. An incredible attention to detail is evident in the construction of this blade…it’s difficult to make out in the picture, but the knife has beautiful mosaic pins and nicely executed red liners between the handle scales and the bolster and tang. The transitions from handle to bolster to tang are smooth and elegant, and the grinds appear to be perfect.

The knife fits in the hand exceptionally well (as it should, since Jerry custom-tailors each handle to the measurements of the owner’s hand). The balance point is right at the bolster, making the knife extremely light and quick. I’m certainly no martial artist (I’m not even much of a hardcore knife user), but the Bowie has performed exceptionally well in all of the limited cutting trials I’ve subjected it to in the last couple of days. I realize that my choice of blade steel was probably somewhat contrary to the predominant opinions on these forums these days, but I was a little (probably inappropriately) gun-shy about the corrosion resistance of Jerry’s signature CPM-3V steel blades (economic concerns were also a factor in my decision). Besides, I figured that I could hardly go wrong with Jerry’s craftsmanship and Paul Bos’ heat treat…ATS-34 can be a great cutlery steel when done properly. Rest assured…I will own one of Jerry’s 3V blades in the future (in fact it’s already on order

One of the most pleasing features of this rig is Sandy Morrissey’s expertly crafted tooled leather cross-draw sheath:

I expected that Sandy’s work would be very good, but you really need to handle one of these sheaths to appreciate the true artistry of his work. It’s a fitting match to Jerry’s exceptional blade. The combination of the traditional/tactical sheath and Jerry’s modern evolution of the Bowie knife make for a very sweet package…kind of what you would expect to see if we lived in a 21st Century society where gentlemen still carried long blades. The whole rig is truly top-shelf stuff, and Jerry has been a real pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended…

Jim

Edited to fix the image thingies (I hope)

Jim,

That's a nice one. If we got tired of seeing new ones, we wouldn't need Bladeforums anymore. I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

Jim, that is truly a beautiful handle on a beautiful knife. Mr. Hossom is on my "when I get a full-time-job" list.

Did you say we probably get sick of these things. Not a chance.
That's a beauty.

Keith.

Congratulations, Jim! Can't imagine ever getting tired of seeing examples of Jerry's work (or Sandy's either). Thanks for sharing and be sure to give us a report after some more use.

Thanks Jim, great to see another of Jerry's masterpieces. That sheath is great. What does Sandy call that pattern?

I am also very pleased you too used your millenium bowie uglyjim. truly you can't apprecaite the wicked power this blade has with it just sitting on your shelf.. hell it toko me 1 year to figure that out and it was like a second honeymoon in vegas

Concur with all of the above. Anybody who finds themselves getting tired of looking at a work like that might just as well turn in their BFC password and be done with it.

Jim, Sure looks nice. I was lucky to spend a little time with Jerry on Saturday. The fit and finish on his knives is nothing short of excellent, but what really gets you is what he does to a piece of steel.

I used to have a strong bias against hollow grinds, until I learned what worked in the applications I usually encounter. (Mostly clearing brush for a campsite on some land I need to clear.)

Jerry's knives literally jump to life in your hand. He is an artist at achieving a balance that felt great to me.

He does exactly what I look for in a hollow ground knife. Which is a convex edge, a little steel behind the edge tapering down in thickness towards the center and thickening towards the spine. I guess I better get in line for one and put it to some use once I get some other stuff paid for, but I certainly liked what I saw.

Any time I get a chance to get a good long look at a Jerry Hossum knife, I take it. His designs are unique, his lines clean, and he streeeetches the blades out an incredible amount. All in all another great knife from Jerry. Thanks for showing it.

I really like the figured birch scales! I've never seen one of Jerry's bowies with scales like that- absolutely stunning. I may have just found what I want him to use for my Black Espada.

As far as Jerry's ATS-34 Millenium Bowies go, never fear. I still have the original prototype that I use as a benchmark for all my cutting tests. I train and cut with that particular bad boy at least twice a week- and you guys know the kind of cutting that I like to do

- and the blade remains pristine. Hell, it hasn't even needed to be resharpened yet. You just can't beat Jerry's convex edge, reinforced hollow grind and Paul Bos' heat treatment for squeezing every inch of performance out of a blade steel.

Congratulations, UglyJim, and welcome to the gang

. Enjoy that blade.
