I realize that you guys probably get sick of seeing these things, but I still felt compelled to share
. I just picked this beauty up from the Post Office over the weekend:
As Im sure you can tell, the knife is one of Jerry Hossoms justly famous Millennium Bowies a 12 blade of brushed ATS-34 (just a tad over 18 OAL) with a 416 stainless steel bolster and a wonderfully flame figured (stabilized) birch handle. I specified my preference an organic handle material and left the final selection to Jerry Im extremely pleased with his choice. The fit and finish on the knife are amazing and are among the best Ive seen in custom cutlery. An incredible attention to detail is evident in the construction of this blade its difficult to make out in the picture, but the knife has beautiful mosaic pins and nicely executed red liners between the handle scales and the bolster and tang. The transitions from handle to bolster to tang are smooth and elegant, and the grinds appear to be perfect.
The knife fits in the hand exceptionally well (as it should, since Jerry custom-tailors each handle to the measurements of the owners hand). The balance point is right at the bolster, making the knife extremely light and quick. Im certainly no martial artist (Im not even much of a hardcore knife user), but the Bowie has performed exceptionally well in all of the limited cutting trials Ive subjected it to in the last couple of days. I realize that my choice of blade steel was probably somewhat contrary to the predominant opinions on these forums these days, but I was a little (probably inappropriately) gun-shy about the corrosion resistance of Jerrys signature CPM-3V steel blades (economic concerns were also a factor in my decision). Besides, I figured that I could hardly go wrong with Jerrys craftsmanship and Paul Bos heat treat ATS-34 can be a great cutlery steel when done properly. Rest assured I will own one of Jerrys 3V blades in the future (in fact its already on order
).
One of the most pleasing features of this rig is Sandy Morrisseys expertly crafted tooled leather cross-draw sheath:
I expected that Sandys work would be very good, but you really need to handle one of these sheaths to appreciate the true artistry of his work. Its a fitting match to Jerrys exceptional blade. The combination of the traditional/tactical sheath and Jerrys modern evolution of the Bowie knife make for a very sweet package kind of what you would expect to see if we lived in a 21st Century society where gentlemen still carried long blades. The whole rig is truly top-shelf stuff, and Jerry has been a real pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended
