Meaning of 'red x' in thread comments?

I haven't seen this before. Does anyone know why it there, and what this is used for? Thanks.

I always assumed that it meant there was a problem loading a picture - maybe because the picture was removed.

Yep means a pic has failed to load for one reason or another.
