When measuring a blade is the overall length measured from the hilt to the point of the blade or from the point back to the end of the cutting edge? And yes I am a little green, but I like to learn.

Most manufacturers will give you blade length AND cutting edge length. Both are important. Blade length : straight from hilt to tip (gives you an idea of balance), cutting edge length : from tip to choil, or hilt or unsharpened part... (the "useful" part of the blade, as far as cutting goes).
