Not quire sure how to buy a replacement handle for my 40+ year old (American made) axe. Based on replacement handle specs found on line they are not quite what the head opening appears to measure. Is the handle supposed to be undersized to be expanded by the wedges?
Our head opening on the outer side looks like 2.43"x .96" which converts to 61.6mm x 24.4mm. The old handle is still in place so that was by trying to get calipers to tough the edges of the opening without being inside.
Most "full sized" handles I find are spec'd at 2 3/8" x 3/4". That seems pretty undersized, at least in the width.
Any suggestions?

You're right about it being undersized for wedging(width),so that above is indeed your size.

The very slight,2.43" vs 2 3/8" difference in length is about right too,the tongue of a new handle is frequently a bit shy in the front of eye.Usually the wedge, cut to full length of eye, will fill that void.
(a slight gap there is not that big a deal anyway,it's the back of the tongue that you want to fit snug, and the sides).
So it sounds like you have a perfectly standard eye,and are looking at the right-size handles.
