i am looing for a small compact hydration bag compatible meat bag that can be used to pack out a deer or hog, either quartered or deboned. i was looking into something like this: http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Black-Gorge-Hunting-Pack,941,67.htm
I used to use the old alice packs but having to lug around a bottle for water was a turn off. I really like the idea of a hydration pack on board. any sugestions. thanks

Ive used a CamelBak Ranger for a long time. The bag is AWESOME for the price. I think I bought it on sale for 40$. Best 40$ pack around if I had to put money on it. The small front part folds out and forms a sort of shelf. A meat bag can be strapped on to it and tied on with some rope. It can carry out a deboned 120lb hog, but is very uncomfortable if you have to pack the meat for more than a mile or two. Those small hydration packs simply aren't made to carry heavy loads.

I'd recommend just getting a normal daypack. They are constructed a little heavier and are capable of packing 50lb loads with a little more comfort. If you're hunting close to your truck the smaller pack might work well, you can just throw the pillow case of meat over your shoulder.

I just took a good look at that Blackhawk expandable pack. I'd say if the fit and finish is good with sturdy stitching it looks like a really nice pack! I kinda want one now.

The pack in the OP's link looks a bit small for meat packing. The expansion feature takes it from about 1500 to about 3500 cu. in. but 2000 cubes of meat space wouldn't be enough for me. I use canvas or heavy gauze game bags and strap them off to a sturdy pack frame. I could hang my Platypus hydration bladder near the top if I wanted to.

Of course, if you are a smart guy and make several lightly loaded trips instead of one monster load trip (like I often do), that first pack might do the trick.;)

[I would also be concerned about soaking a fabric pack in meat juice and blood if I ever wanted to use it for non-hunting overnighters. Mr. Bruno and smaller varmints might take an unwanted interest in it. With a pack frame, I put a heavy contractor's trash bag against the frame before strapping on the game bags and get relatively little contamination of the pack frame.]

Ey brah, just noticed says your from garden isle. Me too!

I doubt that bag would be too small to pack out any deboned hog, goat or koke'e blacktail you'd shoot. I hunt north shore, so its super thick most of the areas we hunt. A small bag like the one you posted is crucial, but it must be able to pack meat. I know the dilemna you're going through.

Howzit Evbouret! I will be using one of the cabins in Kokee next month and havent had a chance to hunt for several years now. I plan on taking my dogs for some dog and knife action. Its good to know there is a local braddah on the forums. aloha
