Took number one son (12 years old) and my father-in-law out for Indiana's opening weekend this morning and saw more deer than I've ever seen in one day! (Also a Barred Owl, a few 'coons, and lots of squirrels) They all were very skittish and would bound into the area then turn, go tail up and run off in another direction. Even the deer I could see out in the field 1/4 mile away were nervous! Only one pair of does am I sure was scared by us when Ben bumped his gun against the stand getting turned.
Nothing came close until around 8:00 when Ben and I were both getting comfortable and simultaneously, we saw a young buck coming through the thick brush. As Ben was getting his muzzleloader up, the buck looked straight at us, BUSTED! We froze and waited for him to settle down and played hide-and-go-seek with him for a few minutes until he seemingly had enough and started to tense up and stomp. That's when I decided that Ben didn't have a chance and rolled my T/C Contender across my chest, laid my head sideways to get a good sight picture and squeezed off the round.
The buck ran only 30 yards before piling up and he actually ran TOWARDS the road for once! Nice young deer and Ben was thrilled to be able to watch his "old man" bag a deer. It would have been nice for him to take the shot, but he understands why I did it. Maybe this afternoon...
How has anyone else done so far this year?
