I don't know when it started, but I never heard of the "Don't tread on me" until a year or so ago.

The phrase is found on the Gadsden flag. It was first flown aboard a Colonial Troop ship on January 4th, 1776. Christopher Gadsden designed it in 1775 during the American revolution. So it has been around a minute or two.
