I broke my hand about 7 weeks ago and got the cast off a week and half ago. I still have atrophy in my hand and wrist, and punching/drilling out stitch hole for my leather is growing troublesome. So i was wondering if anyone uses or know of a mechanical advantage, i.e. a press or something that would allow me to get my holes without straining my hand for a short time until I get all my strength back. Thanks in advance. Moose

A drill press without the motor running mimics the action of a sewing machine.

Chuck up a large needle, or an ice pick type awl, or maybe even an awl and have at it. It should be considerably easier than hand punching with a awl and in fact, you may even decide to continue to do it that way after your hand heals. Nice straight holes!

That was the exact same thought that I had, but I didn't know if it would work well. Thanks for the heads up, I will give that a try. Thanks again. Moose

I use the drill press running. I chuck up a sharpened needle slightly larger than I use to stitch with.

Chuck uses a hammer and awl.

i'm no sheathmaker, but the few i've attempted, i've used a small bit in my dremel to drill out the holes.
