My top end for knives to date has been around $200. I'd like to try something the next rung up in quality.
I really like the look of the Medford Praetorian line. My goal is to buy an edc knife to last my lifetime.
I've scraped up funds for a Medford slim praetorian by selling off most of my other knives.

My question for you more experienced folks in the high-end knives;

Prior to pulling the trigger what should I look at in the same price range or less ?

+/- 4oz is pretty Much max weight for an edc for me.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom. 🤜🤛

Photo is the build I like so budget of $600 or less for alternatives.

The praetorian slim is not an overbuilt knife. It is robust, and solid, but not overbuilt like the majority of their line. It is a great knife though. Other knives that will last you a lifetime in a similar style would be a CRK Umnumzaan, Large Inkosi, or Large Sebenza; or a Hinderer XM-18

There are lots of good options in that price range, including CRK Sebenza, Inkosi, Umnumzaan, Hinderer XM-18, Spartan SHF, but the Praetorian Slim is just as well built as any of them. If you like the design I doubt you'll be disappointed. Unlike most everything else Medford makes it has very sensible proportions for a pocket knife and that hollow grind is awesome. Only flaw is that the lock is a bear to break in and even once broken in it's a bit stiff.

I very much like my Praetorian, although for what it's worth if I could only have on knife in the price range it would be an Inkosi hands down.

Thanks for sharing your experience Random Dan. One thing I have noticed is with Medford's I've heard of several quality control issues on several models. Doesn't seem like I've heard of a single issue with a Chris Reeves knife.

Definitely something to think about. I'd be heartbroken to Shell out that kind of money and get a freakin factory second.

If you want a Medford.
Get the Medford.
If your willing to be talked out of something you said you want, then you don't really want it.
If you are just seeking approval from us..... to hell with us! If you've done your research and decided that the Medford is what's for you, then nothing we say should make a difference.

It's not something I would likely buy, but I don't begrudge you one bit for liking it. All things considered, they are worth the asking price

I don't have the Praetorian slim but I do have a Slim Midi; great knife and definitely not the "chunky" style Medford is often known for.

That said when I think one knife for a lifetime - I would personally go CRK.

I know you said you like the Praetorian look but you might consider an M-48. Fantastic knife. I will say I think the m48 is longer overall. I love medford and have owned quite a few. They’re fantastic, awesome quality knives. If weight is a concern, I definitely wouldn’t look at anything heavier than the slim dimensions. Best of luck man!
