I am at my wits end, I am not a cutler by any means but I don't usually have a problem putting an edge on a Blade, Just recently got a nice looking Puma Medici Stag handle and for the life of me cannot get a shaving edge on te blade it is 104RC hAVE TRYED WET STONE AS RECOMMENDED also ceramic no go wondering about using a steel, HELP stuck in DullsVille!

I'm working with a stone now but man it's just Hard stuff!definatley not S30V and the grind is really steep but the Knife is very nice looking but nice don't cut!

How dull is the knife? Can you slice a piece of paper? Is the sharpening having any effect? What stone are you using? Are you keeping the same angle which is ground on the blade, or changing it.

No steel can be hardended to 104RC im not even sure if the scale even goes up that high with any useful accuracy.

If that is really 104Rc, you need a diamond stone and some serious elbow grease. Or better, sent it in and have it sharpened.

But like sOurce I wonder what that stuff is...Its definitely not steel, and in that range the Rc scale doesn't make much sense.

Hi everyone thanks for the advise, I've had a little success with a diamond sharpener I had lying around and 104Rc is stamped right on the blade, very hard steel not a big fan I'm much more accustomed to sharpening s30v and or my Rosselli Hunter or coldsteel knives carbon V etc., although I really like the looks of the Medici I think it will be one of those ongoing projects that goes in the draw and comes out when I'm not in a more patient mood!

That is either a mistake or doesn't refer to hardness. Steels typically max out at 65/66 HRC, even the insanely high alloy CPM REX steels will max out at ~72 HRC. While the knife may appear to be hard, try a 220 SiC waterstone, it will eat through it like butter.

Even if the knife was pure vanadium carbide, it would still only be ~92 HRC. Interesting choice of notation, a lot of people will assume that is a hardness.

Puma's Medici's have a thick blade made for stabbing, not for cutting much of anything like the old Italian push button stilettos, try as you will, you will never get it hair popping sharp, it was designed for self defense, not a work knife.

The thickness of the blade won't stop you from getting the edge extremely sharp. Even very thick and obtuse edges can be honed to a high degree of sharpness.

I guess razors are only thin because they look good that way?

Thickness of the blade does make a difference and thick blades can never be as sharp as thin ones, end of story!

The deep hollow grind leaves the edge very easy to hone, plus there are weight considerations. In terms of sharpness and profile, J.J. of Razor's Edge used to shave himself with a felling axe as a demonstration of its sharpness.

Do some reading on the cutting tests done by Fikes on really big blades like the Jungle Honey and the tests Tai Goo does whittling hairs, and see if this doesn't represent really high sharpness.
