Have any of you tried to forge a medieval type steel arrow head? Most of the ones I have seen illustrated in history books seem to have been made for millitary use for punching through sheet metal armor. I have not seen any specifically made for big game hunting. Have any of you used your own arrow heads hunting? If so, I would like to see some pictures of your forged steel arrow heads.

I am sure there are more, but here is the only story I know of a guy hunting with his own hand forged hunting heads:

My knifemaker friend forged out four heads and planned on using them to take a hog on his longbow hunt. These were the triangular shaped heads somewhat like Native American points. Modern mutliblades were the only concession to non-period he'd made in the past.

He put all four behind the shoulder in what should have ordinarily been killing shots.

The pig chased him an 1/8 mile, treed him, and he finally got better penetration pulling out a shaft tipped with modern steel. He stuck to store bought the next year. :D

Don't anyone ask, I won't mention his name.;)

I forged quite a few out of 01 but have never tried hunting with them. They were for a display of medieval arrow and crossbow heads. They are a unique challenge to forge.

Primitive Archer magazine may have some articles on specifics of making old arrowheads of several styles in the archives.

That was a golfball retriever, wasn't it? Jedi golfer. I like it. ;) Thanx, JCaswell.

That was funny! Reminded me of Chris Farley from SNL.

(Feel sorry for the pig, took 4 behind the shoulder and still chased him 1/8th of a mile -must have been pissed! ).
