Hi all.

I am looking into buying either a GSO 4,1, BHK Woodsman pro or a BK-16.
This will be a knife i will always have on my hip, while i´m in the woods. Which one would you prefer?

One more thing: I know the BK-16 is skeletonized (handle), but what about the GSO 4,1 and Woodsman pro?

Thanks

Jonas

The GSO 4.1 is a skelotonized handle as well. I use the M390 GSO 4.1 for that purpose. It a nice lite item on your belt and it is very capable. I have carved spoons and bow drill kits with it, battoned with it and used it in the kitchen. I have never owned or used the other two knives but it appears that the bk-16 has a similar design to the GS0 4.1 so i would personally go with the knife with the higher end steel if i was willing to spend the money. Im sure the woodsman pro is a very well made and capable knife too if you are a fan of that type of handle shape.
Good Luck with your decision!

Another angle would be to contact Big Chris... Look at his stuff on the custom fix blades. I think he has a personal edc in m390/g10 on there with a 3.9" blade right now. He also does the classic kephart design in a variety of high end steals. Send him an email, great guy, great knives. Russ

Thanks guys.
Do you know if the BHK is also skelotonized? I would think not, but who knows.

Size, no fingerchoil (i hate choils), steel, looks, thickness of the blade. They are good all rounders

Have you considered the Top's B.O.B. Fieldcraft knife? I'm planning to purchase one in the next two weeks or so.

Yes i have considered the B.O.B. I just like the look of the others i posted better.

The phrike is too tactical. I´m guessing a lot of hotspots and blisters after a few hours of use

If I had to choose between the three I would go with the Survive. It has better steel and sheath. Although, if I had to go with ANY knife in that size range i would go with the Swamp Rat RMD. I love that thing! Its a great size, weight, and blade steel. Probably the most comfortable fixed blade I have EVER held. After getting the RMD I am sold on SWKW.

The RMD is a great knife, but it has the one thing i hate the most in knives. A fingerchoil. I have an Esee 3 and never use it, just because of the choil.
I know many like choils because you can choke up on the blade, but there is no reason of choking up if the cutting edge goes all the way to the handle. On the other hand you have a better grip on the handle compared to choking up.

It might be easier if you mentioned which tasks you expect the knife to perform. I doubt any blade that length will excel as a chopper. Are you thinking whittling and woodcraft, cleaning game or fish?

Woodcraft mostly. A little foodprep also. I have a Gränsfors axe and an Ontario machete for chopping. So it´s just for allround tasks around camp.

The knives listed will certainly do that. The Fieldcraft knife is optimized for bushcraft, which is why I want it. The Beckers are all good knives,at least those I own and have used. As far as I know there is a wait time on the Survive knives,I've been to their site and they don't seem to have any ready to sell. You might want to inquire of them when the model you want is available. If you can't wait that long then order a Becker to work with until they have the Survive knife available. For what you've described you could just use a stainless mora. ;)

I think i will save the money and wait for the survive. I have wanted to try the cpm 3v for a while now.
Thanks for all the input guys

I have several mora :-) great knives but not suited for batoning etc. I usually don´t baton but it´s nice to have a knife that will hold up and also do the finer tasks. I have a bk2 for batoning but that´s not a good slicer :-)

I think I understand your reasoning, similar to mine. The Field knife seems to be able to act as a scandi, yet is strong enough for battoning.,or at least strong enough to survive me. ;)
