I currently carry on me or in my pack, when camping or hiking/backpacking:

1. Mora #2 Classic (neck knife)

2. OKC SP-10 Marine Raider (hip)

3. Cold Steel Magnum Kukri Machete (attached to pack)

4. Small hatchet (attached to pack)

I am a big guy so I carry a little heavier pack than most. Mostly because I need big stuff for my big body. ha ha Anyway, I want a good medium sized knife to live between the Mora and the SP-10. I want the SP-10 to ride in the pack for long hikes and carry a medium fixed blade on the hip. I may be the only guy that is not a 100% sold on KA-BAR. I had the large bowie and snapped that thing in half after 6 hits while batoning cedar. I demand a lot from my knifes and they are used constantly. I have a lot wooded land behind my house so I am always back there honing my skills and trying to learn new skills.

Ideas? Please let me know what you use in this size range and the hell you have put it through. Thanks everyone.

I'r recommend the Koster Bushmaster 3V ( around 2 bills) for that category. It will soon become apparent you can use this knife for 90% of everything.

Specs:
10" total
5" Blade, Flat ground @ RC 60
Blade stock: .22" 3V, flat ground with V grind

Very, very nice knife in several different colors and grip choices. If you can't find it PM me for info.

I have to admit I don't know much about Puukko knives. How are they will batoning and processing wood?

I've done some small batoning with my handmade one, and it does hold up.
If you want a slightly bigger knife, you could look into Leukus, which I believe would be great for batoning. My leuku was a birthday present, so I haven't tried it yet but it's very solid.

Maybe the OKC Ranger lineup? The RD-4 has a 4.5" blade and the Afghan a 5.0" blade. Both are 1/4" thick. There is also a Bush Series of the RD-4 that is 3/16" thick. An RD-6, RD-7, and RD-9 are also available in 1/4" thickness, or in the Bush Series at 3/16" thick. These are great knives, inexpensive, made from 5160 steel, and TOUGH! I have the RD-4 and love it!

Take a look at the BCNW-O1 from Bushcraft Northwest. Basically a Mora on steroids, it has all the best features of a puukko and Mora knife, but with a full tang, bamboo scales, and a 4mm thick, 9.3cm long scandi grind blade made of O1 tool steel goodness. The knife was made for woodcarving and batoning. I love mine and I consider it to be an ideal medium-sized bushcraft knife.

The Ratmandu (RMD) from Swamp Rat Knife Works! Just what you're looking for; in stock now at their site. The best $150 bucks you'll spend. Guaranteed for life.

I think you should look at the ESSE 6. Great knife and if you break it they will replace it.

to me, mid-sized falls in the 5-7.5" blade range, so;
ESEE 6
BK7
Ontario FF17
JK Large Bushcrafter
Booshway
Fletcher Bush Operator
