From my last post on mid sized knives it is apparent that many here, including myself, see value in the medium sized blades. This time around I want to see what you guys expect out of knives filling this niche. What exactly do you want out of your mids?

For me:

(1) I do not expect them to be "choppers". That is where my FFBM comes in. If I need to split wood I'll baton it and mid sized knives can do this very well.

(2) I don't expect them to be fillet knives. But I do expect them to perform well enough for food prep.

(3) They should be sturdy enough to be used to pry with if needed.

(4) I also like them to feel quick in the hand as a last ditch SD tool.

I consider my mid sized knives to be the "jack of all" type of knife. If I could only grab one... etc...

The CG ASH1 has really impressed me in these regards. I haven't tried an SFNO, Hell Raiser, Ripper, and many others yet though. But my favorite medium sized knife so far has been the NO-E. I have one on the way to me again and can't wait. I'll be comparing the NO-E and ASH1 to decide which one to keep. But either way I'll have an awesome tool.

So, what do you guys look for your medium sized knives to do?

I agree with all of that. I've got my FBM and BATAC for the other tasks. I want my mids to be all around knives. I would also add to that list that it be somewhat good for fighting and throwing, just in case . . . .
HR would perfectly for me . . . for now. ASH-1 is too heavy. ASH-1 SE would be great if the tip was more robust, didn't have the rear talon (so I could hold it further back), and had a more forward balance (at least to the edge of the scales). (note: i'm so critical of the ASH-1 SE only because i really love it. i may even like it more than the HR, but function over form would make me choose the HR)

I'll be comparing the NO-E and ASH1 to decide which one to keep. But either way I'll have an awesome tool.

keep 'em both, you fool. i've "known" you long enough to know that you will have regrets if you get rid of your NO-e, and since i've only got one you're sure as heck not going to get any help from me :p .

from what you've been saying lately, you certainly seem to be starting to feel that way about your ASH as well. if you get rid of yours you will probably be able to find one on the exchange at close to what you paid for yours, that is if you don't wait too long, but you know you'll end up replacing it if you do let it go so why go through the hassle.

good god man, don't get too crazy here. you really need both of them.

Medium sized...??? :confused::confused:

If you count BATAC's to be the small catagory, then I guess that I only use large and small Busse's... Guess I'm gonna have to do something about that, huh? :D

Tyrkon, good thoughts on medium size knives. I agree with what's being said. Went on a motorcycle trip with the guys from work to a hunt camp, took one knife, the Hell Razor in a Spec-Ops sheath. It chopped when required, split wood for the fire, was used for all food prep including opening cans and was part of the day entertainment, knife throwing. I wore it on my hip all week-end comfortably and the knife performed flawlessly. Because of the blade shape, I would take the HR before the ASH1, opening the cans would be easier with the HR. These pics were posted before so I hope I'm not boring anyone but the tree was a deadfall that the HR chopped free and was used to removed all the branches and bark.

I'm enjoying the medium knives more and more.

Looking forward to the SAR knives.

Many authorities recommend a solid fixed-blade knife in the 6" range for survival.

As for chores, I think food prep and general camp chores are what mine see the most.

However, if I really need to chop/dig/pry and don't have the proper tool, I'd expect a medium knife to attend to such matters without fail.

Guyon...Great pics. Where did you get those reflective lanyards?

For very nice lanyards, check Ken at www.knivesandlanyards.com. I think you can also link to his blog from there. Very good guy who does great work at good prices.

As for mid-sizers, Tyrkon, you really DO need to try the Fehrman Last Chance. Ergonomically, that knife is fantastic. There are so many usable grips possible, and it's just rock solid. At .25" thick, it's going be just as or nearly as durable as your NOE, and I believe you'll like the ergos better on the LC. You may not be so happy about the lack of aesthetic flourishes, ala no variety of grip options, but I can't see how you wouldn't find it to be a fantastic do-it-all blade.

After trying several, the undisputed one that lives in my briefcase today as we travel from home to S. California is the Desert Jack. I agree with the user reasons you named completely and can't really add anything.
