Ok, I am starting this one to find out why you guys think these knives are all that.

I will preface this by saying that I use to own nothing but mid sized knives at one time. Now I have very few of these knives. I do not see their purpose at all. and here is why.

1. The typical "mid" sized knife is abut 12 inches OAL and just as thick and wide as the full size knives. The concealability of a 12 inch oal knife is hardly better than a 15 oal SHBM or BME, so the concealability or ease of carry is not really an issue and not an advantage. If I can carry an ASH/SFNO I can carry an SHBM or BME.

2. a typical mid sized knife has a blade length of just under 6 inches. It does small tasks ok and big tasks barely ok. It cannot wack brush, since it is way too short, chopping requires much more effort and batoning is not as easily accomplished. A big knife has that much extra blade to allow much more reach. The great thing is that the handle length is exactly the same, so you are gaining length where it counts the most. It is like having two subaru imprezas, one being the std and the other being the WRX/STI. Sure they both have the same body, but one has way more engine than the other and is way more capable.

3. What does the mid sized knife have over a small sized knife like the AD? Well, the AD is cncealable and can perform all small tasks better than mid or big knives. It is light and can be carried in a pocket sheath hidden off the belt somewhere.

I always carry a small fixed blade or folder with me all the time and this is usually suplemented with a multi tool and I cannot imagine that others don't. What are all those GW's, AD's and MS's doing in your house? So, a mid knife that is not easily concealable is not necessary when a big knife is just as "easy" to conceal and mush more usefull. Having small and large blades I see no reason for a mid knife. My pack fits my SHBM perfectly and I can carry my SHBM off my belt just as easily.

Big and small for me.

having said that a human's size is what matters. A woman or very small weak man, may have an issue with a large knife and in such cases a mid sized knife would be their large knife. My wife for example feels the big blades are too big. But she is weak compared to a man so this makes sense and she prefers mid sized knives.

flame on suckaz:D

Hmmmmm...all good points. Real good in fact. But....

I like to do camp chores with my blade, such as cooking, cleaning (fish), carving, slicing (onions), etc. I think this might be a little difficult with a BM and a AD (maybe a MrS) but a mid-size knife works well for this and some of the other tasks you mentioned. I carry a large knife (BM size) on my pack, a leather in a Tad-Gear pouch on my pack, a mid-size knife on my waist and folder in my pocket. Now that might seem like a lot of steel but remember the only thing I have around my belt is a mid-size knife (0.220") not alot of weight but capable for what I might need if my pack is off and not accessable. I don't agree with carrying a large knife on my waist (BM/FSH). I've done it and it's a pain. Hiking, sitting, kneeling, mud wrestling and various body movement is cumbersome with such a large knife stapped to your leg and waist. I'll stick to having something mid-size on my waist...it works for me.

Just my 2 cents.

Mid sized kife, not a lot of weight? Maybe compared to an FFBM, but cmpared to a BM-E or SHBM the difference isn't much and with only 3 more inches in oal, there is no reason why you cannot carry the larger knife it is all just a matter of the right sheath in both cases. I have had mid knives that were totally unconfortable to carry and big knives that felt fine. I have cleaned, carved and sliced with my SHBM and I know the mid sized knife could not have done better. But that is more an issue of blade and edge geometry than length. especially with the Ricasso which is perfect for the big knife and not really necessary for anything under 7 inch blade length IMO.

Mid size knife is just that, not excellent at small tasks nor at large one's, but a pretty good at each

NO-e!!!!!!!!

At least for camping or outdoors adventure. For city life I have no use for anything larger than a [small] AD or Warden (or folder for that matter) But when in the outerworlds the NO-e is about as good as it gets. Not too heavy to carry on treks and yet can handle most tasks I would ask of her.

NO-e. Best midsized BLADE!!

then you must be a woman or a very small weak man!:D

true, but...

big knives are not excellent at small tasks but pretty good at it and are great at big tasks.:D

I have carved wood with my SHBM, I have sliced, diced, minced, even used my SHBM as a filet knife. Yes, it isn't perfect, but it did well.

Agreed. The older large knives of Jerry's didn't have alot more weight than his mid-size knives do. In fact one of my favorites to carry was the SHSHII (one of the reasons I wanted one so badly;)). But I've been hunting with my HOFSH, with a solid rig to carry it ( Semper Paratus Tactical ) and I did like the fact that it restricted my movement strapped to my leg. Kneeling and sitting were the worst, climbing over logs, and even simple hiking was cumbersome with such a beast strapped to my leg and waist. Not tying it off isn't even a choice....then it slaps around as you walk. The weight is an issue but even more so for me is the length. It's like trying to be mobile/agile with a 15-16" piece of bar stock strapped to your leg. Again, I do carry a chopper...Hell Yeah, but on my pack. My waist carry knife needs to be something that doesn't restrict my movement and that requires it to be about 10-13" long. 2 or 3 inches might not seem alot until you strap it on!!! errrrr, something like that...oh hell you know what I mean!:o

I find that the Steel Heart-E is about the largest blade I can carry concealed IWB. I wear one that way for suburban hiking so that the neighbors don't freak out.

you need to try a leatherman sheath with the multi carry options. My SHBM carries at mid point on my belt and it does not restrict anything at all. Trust me, sheath is everything here.

LOL....a Steel Heart concealed Mike?

"Wow....is that a Steel Heart in your pocket or are you just happy to see me!":p

Rock on Mike...more power to you but around here that would get me noticed and pulled aside real quick. All my knives that I carry concealed fold in half!:grumpy:

I'm agreeing with Solstice on this one. I'm not a woman so I must be a very small weak man.:D

Do you cross draw? Cause I've tried the mid-ride sheaths and the pull on my right side isn't that great. Having long arms, I get the knife half way out and I get jammed up. Now cross draw would work and I do this when I have my .44 strapped to my right side. I guess it's all on how you "can" carry a knife.

i prefer small to mid sized , as i have no real use for a large chopper
so for carry its a rat trap and either a mean street , a meaner or a satin jack = perfect
i think i would really like the sow but so far i am to cheap to use it , the cg ash's i have are to thick for my preference so i am really looking forward to the arrival of my le's

actually the two easiest ways to carry are with the belt hoop just under the ricasso positioned to the outside of the kidney area. I can carry up to a SHBM size knife no problem in this position. The FFBM is just to heavy and pulls my pants down to much, but the CGFBM might work, although I have not tried it. The SHBM and the BME work perfect in this position.

The other carry is the original drop leg sheaths that came with the original slotted bolt SHBMs as seen below. This carry completely turns your SHBM into part of your thigh and I do not even feel it when hicking. but it is very visible. It is kinda like the low slung holster carry when wearing body armor. You can run with those holsters as long as your weapon is buttoned in.

Hey now....that might work. The rig in the picture that is. Ok, Ok,....send it too me and I'll try it out for a year and give you some feedback. Hey, who knows there might be a "I told you so" in it for you!:p

That's Cliff Stamps knife, I recognize the pic,

Cobalt you hit the nail on the head for me. I've got a FSH coming in to replace my ASH for that very reason. The ASH is pretty big, the FSH is a bit bigger but to me the FSH + AD or GW combo is better than a ASH + AD/GW combo.

Note that I said for surburban hiking. While I am standing or walking, no one is going to see a SH-E IWB on me. Sitting, driving, etc. would be a different story.

I also believe that, when wearing a jacket, I could wear a Ruck fully concealed, across my back. Haven't tried this, though.

I'm with you for the most part Cobalt, not much difference in carring a medium vs. a large blade. Here is my combo choice, the 9 3/4" BBSHSH proto, it is .250" and has basically no distal taper, so it is .250" almost to the tip! It is light, but long to do chopping, also a fairly good slicer due to the thickness. My small knife choice would be the Lochsa, one piece of titanium, nothing to break on it and it is a good size at 8.25" OAL and a 3.25" blade.

Or maybe you just want one knife that has a small and large blade!
