Now i know i have anther thread asking about a knife but this is a tad different, its my cousins bday (turning 22) and he is getting a new job doing maintenance and when i asked him what he wanted for his bday he said if i could find him a medium sized knife (medium sized to him is around 3.5 inch blade) that would be able to handle what he will be doing with.

Includes but is not limited too.

Cutting rope
zip ties
plastic cords
nylon ties (the nylon ties that people use to tie down pool covers)
Shrink wrapping (the things he will be using come packed in it)

He said he wont pry with the knife (has a pry bar in his tool box along with various other nicely made tools)

He didnt specify a blade steel or a handle material

He said he want something he can clip in his left back pocket on a pair of work pants.

He also asked me not to spend more then 60$ on it (im actually planning on putting my purchase off for this because its more important to me to get this for him instead of myself)

Id appreciate the help, his bday is saturday and im going to order it online.

He has also never had a decent pocket knife besides a smith and wesson extreme ops that so i really doubt he has any biased towards brands i think he is just looking for functionality

he is also worried about the tacticool look, im not sure why but he seems to be worried about it looking like a deadly weapon.

If i cant figure it out no big deal, ill just buy him a few tools for his job but id like to get him a knife.

A 3.5" blade is probably going to be seen as a "weapon" by any non-knife people no matter how you cut it. If he wants a nice friendly looking knife I would recommend the Spyderco Delica 4 with orange handles. It's under 3 inches but if he's cutting cords and ties, opening boxes etc I don't see the need in anything bigger. The price is also right at $60.

Awsome alright ill check it out, he is the kind of guy who describes the perfect thing, but doesnt expect it, and will appriciate it regardless of what it is and will use it all the time.

Also is the spyderco salt 1 the same as the delica? it looks similar when i happened across it and the rust resistance that spyderco speaks of is interesting.

Just curious

Go to WalMart and pick out a Kershaw that fits.

A Blur is a good choice for example.

It's everything you requested.

How about a Cold Steel Voyager? It is a tough knife that is easy to sharpen and will be easy to carry. Also there Mini Recon 1 is real nice. A Spyderco Delica is another good pick. For the money a Buck Vantage Pro is a very nice knife and comes with S30V steel. Even though they are cheaper a Kershaw Volt II or a Clash would also do the job. There are many to pick from and most will do the job he is going to use it for. Good Luck! Kevin :D

Alright thanks im going to look into all those things u named, i hear cold steel has a really dependable lock so im gonna look a bit into them.

Yes the Tri-Ad lock is considered by some to be the strongest lock going. The American Lawman and the Holdout are also very nice Cold Steel knives. They all have the Tri-Ad lock so it would be a matter of which style you would think he would like. Good Luck. Hope I have been a help. Kevin :D

Although I am a strong believer in straight edged knives if he will be constantly cutting stranded materials a partially serrated knife may be a big help, perhaps a rat 1? If not another nice solid folder is the Kabar dozier at around 20$ it is well worth it and will last a long time.

alright thanks, not sure if he will need serrations or not honestly.

i just watched some of cold steels advertisements and it made me lol, any company can make a knife sharp and have a fat guy stab and chop at stuff with it.

Remember, you are not buying the ad. You are buying the knife. A lot of people dont like the ads Cold Steel puts out but since Andrew Demko came out with the Tri-Ad lock it has made Cold Steel more popular. There new designs and blade finish are way better. The Tri-Ad lock has revised Cold Steel. Good Luck with what you buy. Kevin :D

i know i wasnt putting down the knives because of the ad they just kinda made me laugh

I second the blur. I'd still carry one if I knew how to stop spending $ on knives.

I say spend the extra 15$ or so and get the S30v one.
