Been awhile since I've contributed or posted in this forum, but have always been lurking. In all honesty, I've been waiting for the right time to post this thread until I procured the right scales, and I managed to find a good-for-one-set of butterscotch westinghouse scales for this project.

Granddad's favorite knife in his later years was the 835Y Schrade Walden stockman, and it's the one that was in his pocket when he passed. He had a few I retired but below was his I still use...

Which maker comes to mind currently that can do a custom of the same dimensions?

Having done many of custom knives over the years, I know more blades is more money, but I want this to be a user and preferably out of carbon steel, so I'm looking for an active maker in the <$1000 range to make this one happen, preferably less expensive as I've lost a Chamblin before, and learned my lesson on securing $$$ pocketed knives, but still...

AND as a back-up for potential re-scaling project, does GEC offer a similar pattern? Last I checked all their stockman were full sized and I don't know what pattern to look for currently.

Thank you,
Eric

I don't know if he does carbon steel, but my Hiroaki Ohta whittler was a completely new pattern for him in my specified size and a steel he doesn't usually use (zdp-189)...and it came in well under your price range:)

What's the pattern to request on that Ohta whittler?

It's like you're in mind my brain.

This was my second option as my grandfather also coveted the swell center whittler of the same configuration. In fact, I put a #48 Queen into his grave to enjoy on the other side. As a bonus, I own an early Kawamura whittler and have always wanted an Ohta. I married into a Japanese family with a beautiful HAPA son I've been teaching the ways, so this might be the perfect alternative.

I don't know if he ever added it to his lineup, but feel free to steal the pic and ask him about it...I'm sure he'll remember it )
