Are there any USA made medium sized stockman a comparable to say a schrade 8ot for under $50? I prefer Spey blade over pen and preferably have it say USA on the tang

Case makes a Couple medium size stockman knives 6318 or a 6347, and would be in the price range you mentioned.

Buck 301 (same size as the old 8OT) and Buck 303 (same size as the old 34OT or about 5/8" shorter than the 301) - made in Idaho USA. OH

My 301 measures 4 inches closed. I think the 303 would be considered the medium size. (I don't have the 303)
Either one (or both) comes in at under $50, depending on where you buy.
The Buck's are hard to beat.

I also suggest a Case medium stockman. USA made your choice of CV or Stainless Steel a variety of handle materials and colors. A good looking knife with great ergs and a workhorse for $50 or less. Here's one I carry often in green jigged bone and it handles all my EDC cutting needs with ease. IMO you just can't go wrong with a Case Med. Stockman.

Why do some say case USA on handle some on tang and some don't say USA?

Most of the newer case knives do not say USA on the tang stamp, but they do say USA on the second blade along with the pattern #. For example on the medium stockman it will be on the sheepsfoot blade.

Even though I love my Case knives I feel like a Buck is just something I'm not afraid to get dirty with, and they have good f&f in my experience.

Connor Buck is a great knife and your right you can't go wrong with one. I particularly like the 110 and would chose it over a Case Hammerhead every time. These two knives shown here are both well used but are still really good knives after years of carry. A Buck 303 and a Case 3318. IMO the quality is pretty well equal and the only reason I give Case a bit of an edge in a stockman is because of the availability of different cover materials and colors and the choice between CV and stainless steel. The first one I posted in post #6 is green jigged bone is stainless. This old yellow one is CV. Either way you go Buck or Case you will have an excellent knife for daily carry.

I'm more of a large stockman fan, and I'm sure folks who have seen my posts in the "carries" threads can attest to my affinity for Case, but Buck's USA-made knives are really pretty great, especially for the money. The 303 is no slouch, and the 3-spring construction allows it to carry three significant blades that are sturdier than their size would normally indicate. Plus with the resurgence of the saber grind, I think you may see them start to become more popular. Here's my 303 with a couple wood-handled friends:

I agree about versatility and options, but if I had to buy one without handling in person to use for the rest of my days I would choose Buck. Both of the Case stockmans I have bought have had weak snap on multiple blades (so weak I dont even carry them, the mushy feel makes me feel sick) but every Buck I've used, from a large trapper for skinning a half dozen squirrels, to a stockman for building a skate ramp, has had a strong and positive snap to them. Buck and Case both do great on their stainless heat treats though. You can't go wrong with either of them !

Well, I just bought one of these on Fleabay for $57 shipped. I've always had an Old Timer or Uncle Henry in this size or in the smaller one. My Grandfather used Old Timer knives almost exclusively. I remember a few of those old yellow scaled Case knives as well but He always had an Old Timer Stockman in his pocket.

Thank ye kindly, Randy. I realized looking for the pic that I hadn't carried the 303 in a while, so I figure I'll have to include it in next week's WW. Along those lines, I also just secured a Queen Rawhide series large stockman to go with my Rawhide Barlow, so the combination may dominate WW for a while once I receive my new acquisition. I don't want the Buck to feel neglected. :D

That's a shame, Connor, pretty much every one of my Case stockmen snap well and have decent pulls, but those Bucks snap like gators and are built like tanks for sure.

I hate the thought of not having a Case 47 or a Buck 301 in my collection...

That 301 is the exact match for my "signature" 303. To me, the 301 is emblematic of Buck USA nearly as much as the 110 or 102 are. I hope I can find one that looks that good. :D

Really nice Schrade! OTs in that condition are rarer and rarer by the day, great find!
