Just picked up a 440C version of the Meerkat.

Glad to see companies like Spyderco and Benchmade are "rediscovering" 440C. It takes and keeps a wicked edge. My Meerkat is now hair-popping sharp after a couple of passes on the Sharpmaker. Buck used to use 440C, and I know how well some of the older 110s hold and keep an edge.

As for size, the Meerkat is small, but I think that Spyderco has done a great job of thinking through the ergonomics of the Meerkat (and the similarly shaped Navigator, which I recently bought as well). The handle is form-fitted to even a big hand like mine, and the back of the blade forms a perfectly secure spot for the thumb.

I was dubious about wire clips even after getting a Native III and seeing that they secure a knife pretty nicely. However, on this little knife, they are perfect, and I'm beginning to change my mind about the wire after seeing just how low a clipped knife can sit in the pocket. The Meerkat virtually disappears and can easily be mistaken for a pager/beeper.

Great job Spyderco.

I think my Meerkat has AUS-6M steel, but it's a lot like 440C and I couldn't be happier with it. That phantom lock is addictive and that handle is secure and handy.

Sal,

Maybe you could rename the S-curved Meerkats as some form of kerambit to increase their sales. Mine feels more secure in the reverse grip position than my kerambits and they have finger rings.

I have a meerkat question. I had two, and gave one of them to my son. His opens very smoothly and closes like the instruction book says. Once you move the handles the blade just falls closed. Mine is much stiffer though. It requires one hand to move the handle and the other hand to close it. I have lubed it, but it doesn't seem to help. Any thoughts? To stay on topic, both of the are aus-6 but have been good little workers so far.:D

Send it off to Mike the Spyderco maintenance guy. The phantom lock is a mystery. Hence its name. :)

Do youse guys have the S-curve or the other blade shape? I have an S-curved Spyderedged model and I finally switched the clip to the left. It closes easier and nicer for the right hand, but who cares? It's a great little knife.

Can I just get shipping instuctions etc. from the spyderco website?

The one I gave my son is spyderedge no recurve

Mine is a plain edge reverse s curve. I was suprised at how well these knives perform and how easy they are to hold considering that they are so small. Great little knives. I got a heck of a deal on mine here on the forums.

I'd definitely call first as I'm easily confused by the Wheat Ridge/Golden/Seki situation.

My Meerkat took some time to break in, be patient, it will be buttery smooth after a while.
