Have any Meerkat owners had problems with it's scales coming apart from the liners? I bought my wife one and the scale on the clip side (the one that isn't supposed to move) seemed like it was seperating from the liner. I took it back to the store and luckily they took it back and I said I would be happy with an exchange. when I checked out the other one they had, the same thing was happening. It wasn't as bad but with a little use it seemed like the scale would fall off. How does spyderco attach the scale to the liner at the bottom?there aren't any pins or screws or anything? I just wondered if this had happened to anyone else.

On a good note they had a Blue Salsa there which wasn't ready for sale but I got to play with it a little. It is bigger than I thought but that's a good thing. I think I have found my next knife. If only it came in orange... The compression lock is Awesome on this knife. I can't wait to get it!!

My Meerkat does not seem to have the problem you've described. Of course, I haven't really put it through much in terms of hard usage. It's usually used to open letters, boxes, cut into fruit, and the like. It's a great little knife and the phantom-lock is most excellent (I love being able to engage the lock and then flipping the knife open).

As for the Salsa, I just got my green PE today. It's definitely bigger than I had first expect (I had expected something about the same size as the Meerkat/Navigator/Pegasus). I really like the compression lock, except when I'm not paying attention, then I can "pinch" my hand, while flicking it open with my thumb. The Cobra Hood is very neat, in terms of using it to flick open the blade, and for a thumb rest while the blade is open. One thing that I do notice is that when I grip it hard, sometimes the flesh of my fingers will slip between the scales. When I move my fingers, it feels a bit odd as the flesh comes out of the slot. The green is a very nice color. It's almost the same as the green used in the green Lum Chinese Folder. The flat ground blade has an odd look to it. It has large belly to it, which I think is what I find kind of odd. I'm used to a more spear pointed flat grind, like the one found on the Lum Chinese Folder, or the Calypso Jr. I have a feeling this will be a popular knife, once more people see it, mostly for it's unique look and affordable price.

The problems were on two meerkats that were unused so no abuse was going on. oh well I'll find my wife something. in the mean time I went ahead and ordered a Green Plain Edge Salsa. Can't wait...

I have a meerkat in my pocket now....no sign of scale separation. I had a choice out of 3 knives and only one (in my pocket now ) was perfect though. One had some blade play and one had a gap in the area of the metal liners and pivot. Not the usual spyderco quality.

Were the problem Meerkats you were looking at made in Japan or Golden?
Thanks.

the first one was Golden not sure about the second one I only handled it for a couple of minutes. I didn't know that they were made in both Golden and Seki City.
