Meerkat vs. Dragonfly

The guys over at the General forum were very helpful in helping me pick out an EDC and now I am looking for some opinions on a smaller knife that I can use at the office as we aren't allowed to carry larger knives. As I found this forum and really started looking very hard to find the right knife, I couldn't help but to buy a smaller Spyderco. The Meerkat and the Dragonfly seem very much alike but I wanted to get a few opinions on one over the other. Any have both and prefer one specifically? Thanks very much! :)

I prefer the Dragonfly. Also have a gander at the Kopas, they are more money, but have better steel and more exotic handle materials.

I had both, but ended up letting go of the Dragonfly. The 'Fly just didn't work for me. It seemed awkward for me to handle. The knife was excellent in fit finish, etc., it just didn't seem like a folder I'd use much due to the ergonomics.

The Meerkat is one of my favorites. Small, but easily handled and feels good when cutting.

BTW, if the Meerkat is too small, checkmout some moderately larger blades likes the Navigator II or Pride (if you can find it), or, as mentioned before, the Kopa.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Still unsure but researching both I am leaning towards the Dragonfly. The Meerkat is just small enough and the Dragonfly is just large enough I think. The Dragonfly I saw comes in AUS-8 and I haven't tracked down a Meerkat that has the AUS-8 as of yet. Still on the fence though and checking around on the net as of now.

The SS Dragonfly is ATS-55, so for a few dollars more you can get a really big steel quality improvement.

I seem to be really good at mentioning knives not on a persons list but you might consider the Cricket. VG-10 steel is one of the best. It is wafer thin, and works great as a money clip if you are into that. Or, it fits nicely in the watch pocket, or as I carried it in Greece, around the neck.

Have you ever seen how sexy is a SS Cricket attached to a pair of garters? :foot:

OTOH, from all the little big knives, my favorite still remains the G-10 Navigator (the CF Dragonfly comes close)

my old g-2 dragonfly has withstood more abuse than most of the other tools i own. i can't a/b it with the meerkat adequately enough to post about it, but they are quite stout little implements, and i wouldn't have any reservations about one as a small EDC.

I love the SS Dragonfly as the best small spyderco, but i'm prejudiced because it was the first spyderco I ever bought.

Thanks for all the input guys, very much. Decided to go with the Dragonfly and ordering it now. I will probably regret not getting the SS Dragonfly but want the lightest possible of the two. This is my first Spyderco and I doubt it will be the last. Thanks again for all the help deciding!

The Meerkat is a really neat knife that is a hand filler for being so small. The Dragonfly also fits well into the hand because of the great ergos. I have owned 2 Meerkats. I have owned probably a half dozen Dragonfly's ;)
