My older friend received an email today from someone who would like to sell an item they "inherited from their grandfather." They wanted to meet at the PD. My friend did not know PD meant police department. So, I explained to him what the request was, and we both think it was rather weird considering...

My friend is an internationally recognized expert in this field with known reputation endorsed by others top of the field. He has provided expert evaluations and appraisals for major action houses, etc.

The person attached photos taken of the various components laying on his car seat (not normal). The item seems to be in excellent condition not typical of an antique of this sort.

The person did not provide his full name and the phone traces to a woman that does not live where he says they live. He is down on his luck, etc.

I think this sounds weird and would not do business with this person--considering that HE contacted my friend through his well-established business and this is the first time for such a request. ETA: this is an international business and NO ONE ever felt the need to meet at PD--and this is not the norm for this business.

If it feels weird, walking away is the best option.

The P.D. in this situation can be a ruse to provide a false sense of security.

For example, if your friend is supposed to be the buyer, they can tail him from home or business, waylay and rob him, if not something worse.

Walk away unless other bona fides and security can be established in concrete fashion.

Thanks. I shared your response and he decided he will simply ignore the email—too many red flags.

I'm happy to have been able to help.
