Here is Bura (Lal Bahadur Bishwakarma), his wife, kids and mother-in-law at their new deera, second floor of BirGorkha. The furnishings are sparse but okay by Nepal standards and the free rent Bura and his family enjoys is an unheard of perk in Nepal -- only at BirGorkha could this happen.

Bura was sort of the leader of the prayer movement when I was in the hospital and for that I extend great thanks to him and all the others who followed suit. Thanks, brothers!

And, Gelbu said Bura sent a hearty "NAMASTE" to each and every HI customer, pal, newphew, niece, whatever. Also, said he was ready and willing to make any knife we might design (the D-guard!!??)

Any messages for Bura and family? I'll pass them over via email and Gelbu or Pradeep will deliver them.

Respectful Greetings from the Northeast USA to Bura, Lal Bahadur Bishwakarma and his family.
Bill, you have some good people on your side, on both sides of the ocean!
It's warming to know that HI-USA and its customer base is giving a good start at living to those kids.

Uncle,

Please send my fondest regard to Bura and family.

Tell him that I am the proud owner of two of his pieces, the silver mounted Gelbu Special, and a 21" Ganga Ram Special. Both khukuris do honor to his abilities as well as the current owner.

All the best,

Blues

Many thanks, nephews. When this thread runs down I'll copy and email it over. Gelbu can read it and translate it for Bura and his family. They will be amazed and delighted.

Khukuri FAQ

Uncle Bill, please convey our utmost respect and gratitude to Bura for the quality of the khukuris he makes for us. We consider each of his khuks to be true works of art and are pleased that he graces us with such wonderful blades.

Namaste, Lal Bahadur. I am proud to be providing a temporary home for your first BirGorkha kothimoda and one of your special forward-curving khukuris. Long after I have ceased to be able to enjoy them, your artistry will cause them to be objects of great delight and admiration for others in generations to come. Health, long life and prosperity to you and your family.

My regards as well. I remember squatting is Asia. It is a steady rifle position, one of my favorites. It keeps your butt out of the paddy. As we had no chairs; we did not think of them.
I`m constantly amazed by Americans who have never been there or done that, daring to speak of another culture.
I like my recliner; but with no prior knowledge, I`d drop to the squat. I actually still use it, as I have a frag wound in the rt. lateral femour. It suits me.

Pakcik Bill.

Curious ...
  1. Is the bed seen in that pix is self made at BirGorkha or purchased at furniture shop?
  2. How Bura's family cook rice? Are they using Rice cooker?
  3. Are they using cooking gas or kerosene?
  4. Do they have TV set for their own family or do they share one with others? Is TV considered as a household necessity or luxury in Nepal?[/list=a]I just hope that my curiousity won't offend you or Bura!

    NEPAL HO!

Namaskaar, Lal Bahadur. The khukuris your hands have made come closer and closer to perfection. Please continue the good work and I look forward to trying another of your magical khukuris.

I don't own one of his blades (yet) but I certainly wish Bura and all the kamis well, and I thank them for their artistry and craftsmanship, as well as the blessings they place on the knives they send to us.

Many thanks again, nephews. I'll get this info sent over when the thread wears out.

Mohd, they are using a pressure cooker and a small single burner kerosene stove. This is pretty standard and is what Yangdu and I used when we had apartments in Nepal. The bed is handmade but where and by whom I can't say.

TV is still considered a luxury in Nepal. I am not sure what the percapita income is these days but I think it is safe to say that it's less than $200 per year so TV is quite expensive for most people. It would take Bura a month's salary to buy a new one.
