Meet Chokpa. HI's newest staffer in the US>

Here's Chokpa, Yangdu's youngest sister (21 two weeks ago), all 90 pounds of her. She is the newest addition to the HI staff in the US. She helped in cleaning and packing of khukuris in Nepal and she is stuck with the same job here. Her English is not good so she is going to take an ESL class at the community college next door and work part time at a fast food restuarant and keep her job with HI as Yangdu's helper.

She sends a hearty "Namaste" to all and is looking forward to meeting forumites at the HI convention in a couple of weeks. She will wear Sherpa dress at least for part of a day so all conventioneers can see how the girls dress in the Solu Khumbu.

I'm glad she's here. We can use the help.

This picture is one of those thousand worders for me. We're talking about the spirit in the knife in another thread, and look at this clear-eyed, obviously friendly, helpful and useful young woman, who's holding a knife with a vicious shape, quite capable of appalling violence.

It's also capable of cutting firewood, digging a hole, clearing vegetation. In her hands it is tamed.

With every blade from HI, I've been struck by the same friendly helpfulness, despite their fearsome aspect.

Some of this must be due to their makers, and the spirit of Nepal.

Uncle Bill, congratulations to you and Yangdu, and I hope Chokpa has a wonderful life in America.

(In all seriousness, I'd very much like to hear what Chokpa thinks of the US, now that she's safely here. Is it what she expected, or not? Are the mountains of Nevada a disapointment compared to Nepal? What's she think of McDonalds/Wendys/whatever? Any observations she has to offer would be interesting in my book.)



 
Chokpa has no computer experience so again I am relegated to secretary.

She said she is quite surprised that anybody would respond to such an awful picture -- taken by yours truly, early this morning as Choka arrived for work on the khukuris -- no time for even a smear of lipstick. She wants me to put up a better picture. She said she will answer in kind in the morning before she starts work again. Right now she is cleaning khukuris and said she was too busy to respond.

There! Duty completed.

Uncle Bill, your descriptions of Yangdu and the other ladies carrying CBKC-sized khukuris to deter unwanted advances sprang to mind as one of my co-workers walked by when I first pulled up the picture :

"Holy....!"

The rest of the epithet died in his throat. Must be the combination of her pink shirt, fingernail polish, necklace, fresh-scrubbed look, and the comfortable way in which Chokpa is holding the khuk that threw him off balance, and gave me my morning chuckle.

I have been up working for more than 1 hour. At 7:53 according to the clock in this HP Chokpa is still sleeping -- lazy girl. She stays up late watching American movies hoping that she can improve her English. She enrolls in ESL next week. Stay tuned to see if she makes any progress.
