Greetings you all:)

Here is a picture of my Opinel no.7
Just love that simple rustic old world look of this blade.

This is gonna be my EDC for a while again.

To make it a bit more water resistant, I submerged the knife into hot linseedoil for a 12 to 20 hour stint. Twice

And to top it off I took a teaspoon with a tiny scoop of vasoline, held it above a flame until liquid and poured in into the pivot area and when cooled off remove the excess. Also two times

I guess it's pretty water resistant now because the Ballistol I put in the pivot still seeps out a bit.

Just wanted to share ;)

How do you like it thus far? This is on my next list of knives to get. Is the no. 7 a good EDC size?

For my rather big meaty mitts it is.
A number 8 would be better but it's a lot bulkier in the pocket as well.

6 is all you really need but I've got an 8. Currently someone else is borrowing it and he told me he loved it :)
I think 7 is a great EDC size. The 8 does not carry comfortably.

i carry an 8 and a 7 and most of the time have to feel for them to make sure they're in my pocket. My 7 locks closed also where my 8 doesnt. My 8 is from Coughlins camping supply. The handle is a little different also --KV

My #9 carbon locks open and closed, and is the thinnest, sharpest slicer I own.
I keep it out (a little large to carry) to use around the house, and with grand babies it's safe:
the lock-ring is child proof.

The only thing not perfect about it is the slippery wood handle. Do any of you guys roughen, checker, or otherwise alter the wood to make it more grippy?
Would love to hear some ideas/solutions from y'all.

I shaped my opinels back end more traditional puukko like and its bit comfier now. I've been wondering same as black mambe and I haven't yet tried but I could later try doing some file work. Working wood is not that tough really. One alternative I've been thinking has been carving sides and putting inlay os skate tape or similar. I thought micarta but its too expensive really.

Easiest way is to use some sort of skate tape or hockey stick tape and use that one sides of the Opinel. The fabric tape gives nice grip and is cheap. Good quality tape like that sticks well even in damp and wt conditions.

Did you disassemble the knife or leave it together when you did this? I have a no.8 stainless that I disassembled and did the linseed oil treatment to the handle. But it just doesn't feel the same now. The lock ring is way too lose and there is blade play now where there wasn't any before I took it apart. I have a no.8 carbon and a gardener I want to treat but I don't want them turning out like my stainless.

When you sand it down to get it ready for the Helmsman Spar urathane, once you paint it down and the first coat dries, mix a wee bit of fine sand in a paper cup with the urathane, and brush it on the sides of the handle. It gives a great grip when wet or slippery.

Don't over do it mamba, just a tiny it. The urathane will drt clear, and will have some dritty feel due to the sand suspended in it. It's the same technique that when you paint the front prch steps, you don't want them to be slick when it rains and old Aunty Em breaks her dear neck. Just a little grit goes a long way. Use the finest playground or beach sand you can find.

Good idea for a thread, spydutch!
Apparently, there a lot of altered Opinels in this world!
A quick trip to Google yielded these! The double-ender is cool, but check out the frog!!
