This is Sher Bahadur, "Brave Tiger," and I have to love his name. Sher is about 30 and has about 17 years experience. He is showing off one of his 18 inch Ang Kholas. Sher makes the biggest, beefiest, strongest khukuris of any kami in the shop. His younger brother, Kumar, likes to make long, slender blades -- just the opposite. Both men are excellent kamis and excellent workers. When they come to BirGorkha they come to work, not to chat and drink tea. They are both good producers.

This picture was taken in the shipping room. In the background you see Pradeep, mama, Bhimsen, and an apprentice preparing khukuris for shipping.

Khukuri FAQ

Are "Brave Tiger's" AK's significantly thicker and wider than other AK's. If so, what sort of specs do his have ?

Thanks

JD

Hi All,
This picture demonstrates the benefits of working for HI! Yah, they're younger, but considering the lingering reminents of the CASTE system, they're in good shape. They appear to be fed, rested, and clothed, far beyond the untouchables.

Ain't Capitalism a hoot?

I agree Dan K. The Brave Tiger himself was wearing a Nike jacket and a pair of blue jeans. And everyone looked happy, so unlike in my office.

Thanks so much,Uncle Bill, for posting Sher's picture. It adds to the pleasure of owning one of his khukuri's. Is that mine he's holding?

Llamedos- If you look back I gave all the measurements as best I could of the 18'' AK I received. I think the title was "18'' AK arrives in AZ". 2lb.15oz. of beautiful steel. DaveAZ

Since you brought it up, our kamis and sarkis dress like rich playboys compared to the rest of the kamis and sarkis of Nepal -- this because they can afford the clothes and other "luxury" items.

The way BirGorkha operates is a typical capitalistic venture. We supply the shop, tools and materials and all else depends on the kami as to how much he can earn. We pay no salary (bonuses to Bura for acting as foreman) but make contracts with each individual kami for the khukuris or whatever it might be that he produces. If his work is shoddy it is rejected and he receives no pay. If the work is up to HI standards which are very high, indeed, he receives the wages set forth in the contract. If his work exceeds our expectations he is paid a premium for high quality. In a sense each kami owns his own business and we feel this is the best way to go.

Word of mouth news in Nepal travels fast and far and so it is with the news of the wages being paid by BirGorkha. While I was hanging out at the shop there was a steady steam of kamis from various parts of Nepal applying for work. Sadly, we couldn't use them.

Khukuri FAQ

Uncle Bill, this is driving me crazy.

I think I must be the only one who can't view these pix. Here I am, the PROUD owner of one of Sher's latest indestructable AK's, and I can't see what it's maker looks like.

I keep thinking I'll be able to see these pix any day now, but now I'm fairly convinced that the problem is with my computer. Anyone have any ideas why I can't view any of the pix posted after bladeforums was upgrading, but I can view the pix posted before the upgrading just fine?

Chris

BTW--Bill & I aren't using the word "indestructable" loosely.

X-head,

Take a look at the Kami page on the FAQ. I put the picture from this thread there a couple of days ago.

Uncle Bill--thank you for sending me the pic!

Howard--thank you also for directing me to the FAQ to see the pic--I think I need to start visiting there routinely, because there is a lot of new stuff there since the last time I saw it.
