Today I happened by a Heat Treat company here locally, gave the guy a call and he is obviously extremely knowledgeable about various steels.

I'm bringing in a batch of knives to get his take on costs etc, he also said he'd hook me up with some quenchant..... for free !!!!

I told him I was intending to HT with an old ancient recipe that's been handed down to me:D until I picked up a kiln..

Are there anything specific I should pick his brain about?? to kinda judge just how good the shop is in general, its rather large warehouse and I was surprised to find he would take small orders..

He also asked me why I wasn't using more D2 and 440c....... I told I simply don't have the means to HT them, so maybe now .......... :)

Have they heat treated blades before?

How do they fix warped blades?

Are the knives going to be heat treated alone, to your exact specifications? Or in with other similar steels? This is the biggest reason I bought my own kiln.

Can they cryo treat the blades?

If stainless, how do they quench?

HT with other steel was a concern of mine, I have yet to see their equipment and hoe they would set my knives..although he seems knowledgeable in knives will soon find out..:)

Rob,

Do they have any accredidations like NADCAP. If they do they would have vacume furnaces to do stainless. They will most likley also have salt pots that will HT high carbon steels like 52100, 5160, 1084, and 1095. Salt pots are the best at giving consistent resutls.

If they have a website most of their equipment or accredidations may be listed.
