How would you, Jim March, and all the rest of you mega folder fanatics like living or laboring in our nation's capitol, Washington, DC, where the legal blade limit is 3" and where private citizens are not allowed to own or carry handguns? I was reminded of this when extolling the virtues of the StarMate and how I love it only to have to end up saying that I cannot carry it 5 days of the week when I am at work because of DC's stupid law.

It's more of a travesty than you realize. DC is more or less under the direct control of the legislature; they're the ones to blame for the crazy laws.

Except any legislator that wants to can carry. They get declared "honorary deputy US Marshalls" and basically get CCW equivelency that way.

IF I was absolutely forced to spend time in DC, I'd file a Freedom of Information Act request tracking which legicritters had any sort of Fed badge. It might take a full-tilt lawsuit to uncover it all. Once you get solid proof you've got a few options:

1) Congress passed a law saying Congressmen/women/critters have to abide by the same laws as everyone else. My opinion is that this system violates that, in spades.

2) APPLY FOR THE SAME DEPUTY MARSHALL STATUS. IF you're being denied due to lack of "connections", "status" or similar you've got an equal protection lawsuit on your hands.

3) Or screw court - nail their sorry butts in the media.

Sidenote: at least one legicritter is an NRA board member...Bob Barr? Whatever...if the frequent rumors of this sort of elitism are true, they MIGHT be willing to play whistleblower.

Serious big game hunting possibilities...

Jim

I'll help if you feel like doing something.

(I live to the west and go in to town frequently... I don't necessarily like megafolders, but 3 inches is nothing.)

Folks, it was not the Congress that outlawed handguns and carrying blades of over 3", it was the DC City Council. Back in the 1970s, when Washington, DC, got some semblance of home rule, one of the first acts of the new government was to outlaw handguns. I believe that it was at about that time that they also limited knife carry to a 3" blade. Now Congress can pass a law to override those city ordinances, but that would be subject to a Presidential veto and all other legislative boodoggling, so....... You may blame the Congress for many things, but this particular screw-up is not one of them. This was the work of then Mayor Walter Washington, DC Council Chair David Scull, now deceased, and a City Council that included the inimitable Marion Barry, himself.

Along with CA and Mass, DC has the most oppressive laws concerning one's right to self defense. It is truly tragic. Living in LA I know what you're dealing with. LA has a 3" limit as well. I ignore it.

Laws that are not enforced do not concern me much, because they might as well not be on the books. There is legislation and there is enforcement. Unless both are done, the law will be less than effective. I wonder how many police officers agree with this particular law (hence the enforcement question).

Hugh,

Do you have any feedback on enforcement of the DC 3" law? I consider myself a law abiding citizen and it's annoying to think every time I go into DC that I'm breaking the law. What's your take on enforcement?

DC is not alone. We have the same laws here in the whole state of Michigan. Worse yet, there was an article in last week's paper about a guy getting harrassed for carrying flint knives 'cause they are double edged! He was coming out of the woods and the Conservation Officer stopped him and told him he could go to prison for carrying one of those. A flint knife!!! Evidently there is legislature pending to deal with this. Don't know the status of it though.

As far as carrying a gun, forget that. There was also an interesting story/investigation done by a local newspaper here showing who got CC permits and who didn't. No mystery here. LEOs, or ex LEOs or people who are peripherally involved in LEO work but do not normally carry, and politicians (state and local) or people who were connected (with moola to spread around). Thus, there has been a drive to get this changed in the state legislature, making CC available for all honest citizens. However, that drive was derailed by fallout from the Columbine shooting and as far as I know, has not been back on track since.

Bob, I have no knowledge about its enforcement. For a while, as you know, I was carrying my StarMate and/or my Military, but then that thread on carrying illegally and Joe Talmage's post got to me. I am too old and have too much to lose to risk it. I can't take the chance, especially since I work right next to the DC & Federal Court Houses and the police HQs and the area is crawling with LEOs, frequently doing illegal things, who get real pissy when I notice them doing so. A badge and a gun allow the multitudinous varieties of cops in DC to disobey the law and to put on a real attitude about it.

Washington, DC, where the legal blade limit is 3" and where private citizens are not allowed to own or carry handguns?

Thats NEARLY as bad as here in the UK. Here the knife has to be < 3" and also must NOT have a locking mechanism. And as far as guns, the're a no no.
