Melon knives -- sources?

Melon knife, produce knife, sausage knife, whatever you want to call it -- a long, thin, one-bladed folder is what I'm after. Camillus use to make them, do they still? Any manufacturers or websites you can recommend? Anyone collect them?

Years ago, I got one from Hoffritz that looks like the water, elon knife above, but it has two blades and a fork. makes an ideal picnic knife. One blade is plain edge, and the other is fine serrations for bread.

I've never seen one like it since.

Just what I was looking for. Would have liked to see what Hoffritz had to offer also, but they apparently don't sell a knife like this anymore, or so it seems from their website.

I think Camillus still makes one, but I'm not sure. A.G. Russell carries one with an ATS-34 blade.

Hoffritz used to have a store in Penn Station in NYC. The last knife I got from them there was a Spyderco Provenator, not too badly overpriced. Incredible temptation, all the toys they carried.

Smoky Mountain Knife Works has some cheap ones in their most recent catalog.

Atlanta Cutlery has one similar to the Watermelon knife but not serrated. I think it is about $15.

Puedo Knife Works

Hey, I like that Puedo knife. I also visited Colonial's website (remember them?) and it was old home week. How could I not think of them? They do after all make the quintessential melon knife. I really like their "Swiss Masters" red handled version.

Yes indeed, I also like melon knives! I bought a beauty from Michael, (Chefget), a few months ago, and here he is blowing me away with that thing, (REALLY NICE Mike!). I think A.G. Russell's melon knives are the best ones going right now but are somewhat pricey.

To Gene,

So what other brands can you think of? Melon knives are generally neglected by collectors (probably because they are cheap and plain), but it is an elegant design. I collect doctor's/physician's knives, and would love to see someone make a 5 inch version with fancy scales. Maybe I need another custom?

Schrade also makes one that looks pretty good. They have yellow synthetic handles, and stainless blades. There are two models, with one being 5 3/4" closed, and the other 4 11/16" closed.

Bods,
I couldn't agree with you more! The nicer melon knives I've seen are made in Italy. They usually contain a fork with two or three tines but not always. Unfortunately I don't know a source for them because I've picked mine up through purchases on the forums through the years. I would imagine E-bay might be a good place to check. I do know Queen Cutlery makes a few models and I've purchased them through Smokey Mountain Knifeworks at great prices. They are very good quality to boot. As Rattler stated, Schrade also makes a couple models. I love your idea of a custom model made with top notch materials. Looks like I have another custom knife to contemplate! ;)
