There are some vintage melon testers that are 5 inches closed. I don't know the length of the blade off hand. Probably around 4 inches. The closed length is usually used for traditional knives. I don't think I've ever seen a physicians knife big enough to have a 4" blade. I doubt it. But it could exist.
Have a look at AG Russell's melon-tester. It's better built than they often are.
But yeah, MTs are at least 4", in my experience, and the doctors' knives I've seen are 3" (talking blade length).
