I've read about gun barrels being finished with a nitrating process known as Melonize. Apparantly this produce a very scratch and rust resistant surface thats 55-60 HRc.

Would this be a good way to finish knives? I've heard the process involves placing metal in a solution that can reach 1000 degrees Farenhite, would this change the blade's temper?

Probably. How long it had to stay hot would be the key thing. The finish coating process could be incorporated into the tempering process I suppose. I dunno. Sounds interesting. Do you have any more information on this process?

Yes, 1000 degrees Fahrenheit would destroy the temper -- the knife would essentially be annealed.

If that coating can take being heated to about 1350, though, you could do the heat-treating after coating.
